That might work. But it confirms that the artist is masquerading as someone else, and sometimes that's enough for us to lose all of the artist's work from the site. Also the artists being discussed have not given us permission to do that.

Normally situations like this happen when an artist has asked for a site-wide takedown of all of their art. And the arrangement we've made of their tags was the result of negotiating a way for their art to remain on our site.

When that kind of situation happens, we add moderation notes to the tags to make sure that no one ever merges the tags, or makes the information that these two tags are one artist public, because that could trigger a site-wide takedown again. Each artist has a different situation and every takedown has is own specific needs and requirements for us to preserve whatever art is left on the site. And if any of those conditions are violated then the art is gone.

This is not hypothetical - I just received a PM from an artist who we'd set up with a hidden artist tag a half year ago, asking for their art to all be deleted off of the site. Was it because they got talked about here? Not sure - not interested. I'm just trying to find ways to make artists happy with how their art is organized here. And if the solution is separate artist tags, and we can't comply with the agreement that resulted in their art remaining here, or if we can't keep their secrets, then they have the option of just having it all deleted.

So, for some artists, just saying "This artist tag is owned by someone who has another artist tag" is enough for them to "NOPE" right off of the site. For others, not so much.

For each artist, we try to set up what they are comfortable with, and we try to preserve it and deflect attention if they don't want it made public that they have more than one artist tag. If the artist chooses to publicly talk about their art in a way that we are not permitted to, that's their call. Them saying "This is me" doesn't mean that we have permission to say "That is them", too.

With some artists, we're in a situation where asking them a single question about their artist tags could cause a complete takedown. With others we still have some flexibility and can discuss options with them.

In the case that "[@DJG":](/tagging/request-artist-tag-aliases-here/post/4516746#post_4516746) keeps referring to, we do not have any flexibility, and need to preserve what the artist has asked for. That is our obligation to them. I've gone through the images and where the artist themselves did not add both of their tags I've removed the inappropriate tag. But if they artist themselves tagged both of their tags on the image, that's their call and we're not going to over-ride it.

If it seems like this is something that we made up along the way, but has helped us to retain a large number of artists whose art we didn't want to see leave the site, and each artist has a slightly different arrangement that is all handled via the same Rule #8-style policies, then you are seeing this clearly.

That is the artist's call - they have the right to do that if they want to. On this site, we do not have permission to do that for them. In fact, the current constraints we are working under require us to prevent it from happening.

I can not discuss the details, but if we did that in this case then I'm pretty sure we'd be looking at a full takedown.

On this site, that is how they want their art presented. [If you are aware of an artist or member using multiple names/aliases to keep content separate (such as clean vs sexual content), or using an alternative name as to not be identified, do not call them out or publicly highlight such a fact.](/pages/rules#8)
