People absolutely may add an
artist:<?>
tag to
machine learning
images if they wish.
It is a very good practice as it helps people filter and find that person’s work.
However - doing that does not mean that the artist
has any copyright to the image.
In practice, someone whose artist
tag only includes machine learning
images won’t be considered an artist for purposes of verification, takedown, or badges. They can’t ask for a takedown of an edit of one of their machine learning
images, because there is no copyright. And someone with only machine learning
images is not able to ask for DNP on their tag - again, because there is no copyright.
This is how we have historically handled kisekae
or artist:thisponydoesnotexist
images, or similar images from other kinds of machine generated art.
So, let people tag the images with their artist
tag if it helps people filter or hide them, or if people want to follow them.
But adding an artist
tag to the image does not make the uploader of the image an artist
in any traditional sense here, and it doesn’t give them access to any of the rights or features of the site that are reserved for verified artists.
It’s just a screencap as far as the site’s internal practices are concerned. And, for what it’s worth, remember that people also add artist tags to screencaps.
If it helps people search, filter, and watch the uploads by that person, then it seems a fine thing to allow.
