Yeah, having the jock and the nerd be the same pony was a new twist, but maybe they didn’t do as much with it as they could have.

On that note, I’ve always thought that Izzy’s mechanical skills could have made her a nice symbol for the movement to get more girls into STEM.

AKA another element G5 started but never properly delivered.

To be more positive to g5, Ill give my own take defending one part of it.

People often critique g5 for being too modern what with streaming or internet references.

But to an extent Ive always felt like even g4 was a fairly modern world. It was never some 1910s fantasy world like I envisioned.

Even if it had old timey references like typewriters, its still fairly modern like in slang or even Cheerilees 80s hairstyle.

Granted g5 embraces the more subtle modern setting and upped it to 100. But I dont think its as drastic of a shift as people make it out to be.

G4 approach to technology was all over the place. It was used as props in scene and not as something you should think too much. In one episode train was pulled by ponies and later trains had working engines. Ponies used oil lamps and had access to advanced audio systems. Overall G4 was kept low technology but there were no restrictions if the writers wanted to put in something advanced.

I feel like people overthink the tech level of G4 (and MLP as a whole) way too much

We have ancient Roman/Greek style guards and architecture, but them you also have stuff like arcade machines, Polaroid caneras, blimps, modern day billboards, comic books, then stuff like Twilight’s inventions and the Wonderbolt training equipment

The tech level is and always will be what’s funniest/convenient for the scene

Yeah, very well said. You’re not supposed to put a ton of thought into the lore and the tech of MLP:FiM because it’s not intended to be deep. It’s all about entertainment and that’s cool. But I guess merely pointing out the fact that it doesn’t have strict continuity with some early 20th century setting is “offensive” now.

Tbh I’ve always felt like FIM is different from say Star Wars or Lord of the Rings. The latter two are more foreign to modern sensibilities. One an epic space opera and the other a high fantasy world.

FIM on the other is far more relatable and more like our world. Ponies speak in modern slang. The people of Ponyville live like an average North American small townspeople would. Music stars are often based on pop. Heck even the Diamond Dogs were originally going to be sort of rappers.

One could say FIM and G5 is a fantastical spin on the contemporary world we live in.

I think the tech level comes down to what the creator finds more interesting. Faust probably based FIM on her youth from the 80s and 90s, so you dont really see any Iphone equivalent or a Steve Jobs like pony. Whereas G5 wanted to explicitly address modern trends with the pegasi. (Although the earth ponies feel more timeless and the unicorns sort of primitive.)

Not really defending g5 or backhanding g4 so much as trying to express my theories on the world of MLP.
I think its a fascinating topic that I often wondered myself.

I didn’t have a problem with the modern tech in G5, I feel like it was inevitable that MLP was gonna go down that route because of how ubiquitous smartphones and the Internet has become in our daily lives. Plus within the context of the series, it shows how much time has passed between the FIM days and the MYM/TYT days

In all seriousness, I think it’ll depend on if G6 is set in the same universe as g4 and g5. If it does, it might still have that more relatable modern feel.

Personally Id want some g1 nostalgia. Like make a show that evokes 1980s fantasy like g1 of mlp. Maybe use old style dnd and old fantasy movies like Willow as inspiration.

80s nostalgia is kind of old I’ll admit but I think with MLP this is the one time it might be a welcome addition. (Specifically the fantasy of that period not actually using 80s tech I mean.)

If g5 is seen is as a failed project, Hasbro may want to have a new gimmick.

And what better gimmick than to exploit 80s nostalgia?

Don’t know, we’ll see, depends if they want to go back to the fantastic roots as the original show or go for a contemporary, modernized direction

Gen 1 and Gen 3 were both pretty high fantasyesque. Much more I’d than say Gen 4 which was more modern feeling.

I’d say theres at least a precedent for more fantastical worlds.

The only thing we have to go is the gen 6 leak which may or may not hold true for the near future.

Basicslly there was some short animatic, perhaps a proof of concept where there were multiple g4 and g5 chsracters together. It seems to be a reboot with the same characters but a different universe. Think how Tmnt uses the same characters but its in different universe.

Basically Twilight goes to school and is bullied by the mean diva of the school and Twilight makes friends with other school kids.

We dont have much context of this animatic but Hasbro has tried to take evidence of it down.

But we dont know if this is rejected, accepted or accepted only in parts.

We don’t know if that leak is the actual G6 yet, or if its like a Pony Life scenario where they make a non-canon spin-off to help fill in the gap of content while the actual G6 is beibg made
