Everything not involving ponies is great in The Sounds of Silence.

Actually, we’ve also seen that Griffinstone is basically a third world country that is broke as hell. The swamp ponies seem to be on the poor end as well. So there are some other examples beyond Sweet Apple Acres. Though I agree that having a different rule set for stories based on that is bad.
 
Though there’s quite a few episodes where they try too hard to stay grounded. Like the one where Rarity lost most of her mane, and suddenly it turns you you can’t grow a mane with magic.

That’s another thing that’s been conveniently glossed over. We’ve never really seen how much being teachers has put a strain on the main six’s other daily jobs.
 
The only time it’s ever been treated as a hindrance was in Grannies Gone Wild where Dash asks AJ to cover her classes.

And SAA does OK - AJ just seems to get a mite worried about it, perhaps because of her pathological aversion to hiring outside labour.

It was also mentioned in She Talks to Angel. But mainly they don’t bring it up because it would highlight how stupid them being teachers is in the first place. Of course, I’m not sure what better alternative there was… maybe the Pillars?

The fact that the school taking time from their lives being used as a plot point so early and for few episodes just drives home how flawed the concept was, they really shouldn’t have brought it back for S9

The best option would probably be just using new characters, or background ponies for those positions. No one can say that Lyra or Berry Punch would be too busy since we don’t know what they do.

The word they used was “tricky”. Mane magic is notoriously “tricky”.
 
What kind of phrasing is that?! Magic which even two of the top 10 strongest unicorns on the planet can’t manage is “tricky”? It’s deliberately absurd.

Maybe make it look like what Latecomer said and have the potion contain a side effect where it nullifies magic until the hair gets grown back.

The school was pretty unavoidable, compared to, say, buckball.

The school could have received one, maybe two token episodes and that’s it. And the students could have received secondary roles on two, maybe three episodes and that’s it.

An easy way around it would be Twilight being out of town and Rarity saying she wouldn’t trust anyone else using magic on her mane.

But then you don’t get the amusing scene of them trying, which helps fill out the episode.
