I chalk it up to the fandom not really knowing what they want. Some people really have two settings: either “WHAT THE HELL PANDERING HASBRO WHY DID YOU DO THIS” and “hasbro doesn’t love us anymore :’(”

Explain how having a background pony whose quirk came from an animation error speak, have her name changed to Derpy, and help set off the events of an episode can’t be accused of pandering.

Is there no middle ground? Why do we now suddenly go crazy over the slightest reference? Heck, now even pop culture references are hated.
 
The best is people who want the show to change things that they don’t like about it for no other reason that they don’t like it? Which is hilarious, because that is almost beyond pandering.

People’s opinions on the show are being influenced by fear of the show changing drastically due to some outside force, whether it be “pandering” or Hasbro potentially calling the shots, ect.
 
Most probably consider it some sort of divine blessing that this cartoon is even good, and they fear that it could change at any moment due to these outside forces.
 
Personally I am confident in where the show is going, but maybe not where the canon is going, but that’s just me. I don’t like them doing things like that giant hair dryer into some sort of gag, as that makes Equestria’s economy seem silly. For better or worse, I take things more seriously. It may make me enjoy things more on the whole, but it also plagues we with concerns that more carefree casual fans might not have. Pop culture references or things that might be considered “pandering” don’t generally bother me though.

I know the giant hair dryer thing was a joke, but it was bought with the gem Rarity gave Spike, and it turned out to be the most valuable of them all.
 
I suppose some people do fear that it could change at any moment.

Honestly the only thing that I’ve ever felt was pandering was the stuff in The Last Roundup. I like seeing all the nods to the fandom in the background though. They show that the writers are taking the fanbase into consideration, but they’re incidental enough to the main plot that they never come across like we’re being beaten over the head with it. And even that scene honestly wasn’t that bad.
 
Honestly, the people who constantly complain about stuff like the Derpy background cameos bug me far more than the cameos themselves ever would.

I’m ambivalent about Derpy Hooves becoming canon in TLR. Part of me thinks she should have been kept an Easter egg rather than acknowledged so bluntly, and that would have prevented the Derpygate debacle. Furthermore, I do think the name “Ditzy” may have been used, a possibility Faust suggested based on a character known by name only at the time, if only because some of the audience would object to “Derpy”. (Was I right on that one!) At the same time, that required serious boldness to pull off, and I respect the staff going that far to transcend an in-joke shared among fans and staff into an active part of the show with a real canon personality.
 
As far as Derpygate, I was pro-Derpy because I did not like the retconning of Derpy’s voice and appearance, but I was not as vocal about it as some and do not consider it a show- or episode-trashing issue. But that’s probably too close to typical consensus to be an unpopular opinion.
 
As far as fan pandering, hell, from my understanding, Adventure Time got an entire episode dedicated to an Ask blog character. I don’t consider the show “pandering” in general, although it is clearly influenced by fanon at this point.

/mlp/ is a fine place.
 
But also needs to realize that it is probably more autistic than most of the fandum.

Well I counter by claiming that people who fail to understand that using autism in that manner is an intentional reference to how /mlp/ uses the word are irredeemable and over sensitive.

I like the Doctor Whooves fanon. (That’s not the unpopular opinion.) But I hate how almost all of his Doctor Who related fanart has Derpy as his companion. (That’s the unpopular opinion.) I don’t understand where the assocation of these two characters came from (I’ll assume it’s because they are the fandom’s two most popular BG ponies.) I’d like to see more art of him with other companions. Either other canon characters or ponifications of Doctor Who characters. (Since the whole Whooves thing came from him looking like a ponified David Tennant, why not have more art of him with a ponified Rose, Martha, Donna, etc?) Despite what I just said, I did like the “Doctor Whooves and Assistant” fan animations.
 
Also, I liked his canon name: Time Turner.

Related to this: I’ve never been a fan of Dr. Hooves because like 95% of the fanart and fanfic surrounding him consists of Dr. Who references. I haven’t seen Dr. Who (It’s one of those things that I think I’d enjoy, but I just don’t have the time to binge all of it), and not being familiar with the source of the references, it kind of makes me unable to care much about the character. I like pretty much all the other BG ponies more because they have more original personalities rather than just being “Dr. Who as a pony”.

I can understand that. I imagine it would be kinda tiring to people who don’t watch the show. I don’t really like the “Background Six” but Doctor Whooves is one of my favorites mainly because I’m a massive Doctor Who fan. On the other hand it would be nice seeing a fanon background of him that’s not a DW parody. I’d imagine him being a clock maker or something.

Well, he’s essentially become ascended fanon now. Especially in the comics.
 
Speaking of the comics, I think that the Rainbow Dash Micro Comic was good in spite of the many pop culture references it made. Only RD’s “awesomesauce” comment seemed out of place, really. The rest was okay.

It’s a good show that’s for sure, But i really think there are other shows that should have at least a fraction of the praise that FIM gets such as jewelpet or precure or LPS.
