Every time I look back at the history of the G1 line it’s interesting to see the growth and in the very end, the slight downfall. The beginning when it was simple, the first introduction of unicorn and pegasi and a TV special, a whole series, a UK comic, tons more ponies with lots of gimmicks, the series ending and the toyline deliving into soe more complex gimmicks, the eventual smaller lines, the onset of MLP Tales, the absolute death of unicorns and pegasi in the toyline, the UK comic and the backcard art style and lore turning from magical into mundane, and the tail-end of the line was tonally very different to the beginning some 13 years earlier. It’s far easier to see how we got from magic and mythology to more focused on slice of life with like no magic at all and finally back to magic with slice of life in G4 if you focus on the whole picture as oppose to just the animations. MLP ‘n Friends and Tales show the two polar opposites of G1 lore, and I’m sure the UK comics show that in a progression as they lasted up until almost the end.
 
Most people tend to agree that the earlier stuff focused on magical ponies and a fantasy world are more interesting than the later stuff with more focus ponies acting like humans.
 
The backcard art shoes this in spades.

it’s just interesting to look back at G1 and see how the line started and where it ended, and the 12 year timespan it took to go from this

You also have to look at outside the US line to get the full picture. I often forget a lot of things that were not US native to the line as I read so much about the UK and Europe releases too!

with what LightningBolt said in mind, I have been wondering- do you guys think that the g1 Takara ponies are supposed to look like they came after Pony Tales- which focuses on ponies being more human-like, and they just take it to the next level- as if they’re actually ‘evolving’, or an in-between transition of ponies into Equestria Girls.

Doubt it, as I’m pretty sure they were released in the mid 80s.
 
However I don’t actually know and I don’t think your statement changes any regardless of when they came out. I also don’t recall anyway.

I know that, but I was talking about design-wise. They really don’t look much like a pony, so I was just trying to figure where they would fit, aesthetically, if I were to go with the theory that all gens exist in one universe, just along a different timeline- to explain their different appearances. (especially if we roll with the “ponies are turning into humans over time” theory)
 
on a side note, I tried drawing a quadruped Takara pony for an animation I want to work on for the franchise’s 50th anniversary. I really don’t like it, to be honest. The pony body just doesn’t look unique to fit the Takaras, even though I know they’re just supposed to be ponies. I put up a poll across several Amino app communities asking people’s preferences, and by a landslide, the pony version won out. Trying to construct a way in the story that they are more ‘magical girl’ like Equestria Girls, and just opt to stay in their anthro form rather than their pony base form, because the pony form, strangely enough, just looks off to me.

I did some random image searching for G1…  
 
 
 
…and had to search specifically for Tales to find random images from there reliably.  

sighs of sorrow I kinda wish there were g1 fans interested and with enough time on their hands to help me make a multigen animation. g4 has so many cool fandom animations, while there doesn’t really seem to be a love letter animation for all gens. Or any past gen fan animation, really.
