I honestly think that, for either a episode of FiM or G5, they do a throwback where scenes from G1 episodes play.

Similar to how Transformers Animated reused G1 scenes for Archived Footage.

Lickety Split and Spike were my favorite G1 characters. Though MLP wasn't considered "cool" back then, it was a cult thing at least among toy collectors.

Before the term "ponified" was even coined, it was already being done through toys.

The Magical Fruit
Back in the 80's it was commonplace for producers to inject human characters into kids shows about non-humans, so that kids could get an idea of what it would be like to hang out with their childhood heroes.

I liked how MLPNF portrayed Danny. He was pretty much just a typical boy, except that he wasn't made of snips & snails. He was sensitive and compassionate right from the get-go, and didn't seem to be bothered by being surrounded by girly ponies. In fact, they were his closest friends.

And of course Surprise was great too! (This fanart is from 2007!)
