Seasons 8 and 9 sometimes bug me because of “Hey, you need to see the Movie!” and Fluttershy’s statement “No more adventures, thank you very much”. Even a new intro couldn’t save much. ;-)

Whatever anime is mostly light-hearted except it’s premiers and finals is what I’m casting my vote into.

I’d pass in watching it if an anime movie was made of it.
 
Also 500 pages, that’s neat.

1, 5, and 8 stand out as my favorites.
 
I feel like for all its faults, Season One was the most holistic and deliberately crafted. I could spend hours talking about all the little details.
 
Five is where they said “This show has a bunch of dark places, and we’re going to ALL of them this season!”
 
If you ask me my overall favorite season, I’ll say Eight without hesitating. Season Eight combined the feeling I got watching Season One for the first time, with the feeling I got watching Season Five. It was the first time since S1 that it felt like someone had a vision, and that the show was about something. It was basically everything I ever wanted from the show.
 
I kind of checked out for Season Nine. I keep coming back to this, but if you wanted a proper sendoff for The Mane Six, it was in an alternate version of “Best Night Ever”. I am utterly convinced this alternate version existed at some point, and that a script for that version is sitting on a hard drive somewhere. I should do a write-up explaining why I think this is the case.
 
So I guess part of me didn’t really care if Season Nine was a good sendoff or not. I thought it was about as good as you could reasonably expect by that point. Especially considering the lack of a coherent arc most of The Mane Six had.

I’m glad you were able to enjoy 8 that much - I can’t see it as anything but a mess, but naybe that’s my inadequacy. Same for the latter half of 5, which bored me a lot.
 
Really, after 6 I was unsure if it was worth making more seasons… then 7 showed me yes, it was. But while what followed had some interesting chracters and good episodes, I can’t say it waz great overall.

I feel like Season One is less about the friendships, and more about the individual characters and the ideas explored with them. From Season Six onwards, the show was way better at actually being “Friendship is Magic”.
 
As much as I love The Mane Six, I’m glad the writers got to have some creative freedom with their own characters instead of just endlessly tacking details onto someone else’s.
