I recall it being noted as the first episode not to feature a single character who appeared in the pilot. (Looks like Frenemies is the only one not to have anyone from the whole first season, Twilight’s “cameo” aside.)

What’s interesting is, at a glance, season seven is the one with the fewest total appearances of the Mane Six.

Yeah. I wish the kirin appeared in more than three episodes (two of which only having them appear in short background cameos).

Besides the whole catching fire thing there really wasn’t a lot of difference between a kirin and a pony. And the students that aren’t ponies already handle the culture clash theme. Ocellus is also the quiet one and Silverstream is the talkative one so those are out. There just isn’t any room for a kirin in the group.

Well, there’s the emotionally stunted backstory they all share, I guess… like crystal ponies all have “time-displaced” and “Sombra trauma”.

I think Smolder and Gallus can handle that niche.

I just watched the Bird in the Hoof episode, it was really funny and a little nightmarish. I love Fluttershy and Twilight’s dynamic. And how Twilight was more assertive over time as her stress was building up.
 
Also I think Celestia really shines too in this episode. To think Twilight is so worried about her! Celestia’s a softie!
 
Also Philomena is a duck and should be punished for being a troll.

I speculated this before Season 9 premiered that a new member added to the Student Six would be cool, mostly a kirin.

I think they could have used one for the whole “new non-pony doesn’t want to be part of the non-pony clique” plot that I thought of.
