I’ve seen some hate for ‘Once Upon a Zeppelin’ where people focus on Twilight’s family gushing about the Northern Stars right to her face, and going ‘HOW CAN THEY NOT NOTICE SHE’S CRYING!?”
-
They do notice, it just takes them a moment. And they do their best to make it up to her later, something she clearly values as much, if not more.

I’m fairly sure there are other instances of characters not noticing things right in front of them in this very show. Or seeing something suspicious and shrugging it off. It just happens for the plot sometimes. I’m guessing, because this is an emotional moment, people pay attention to this one more, but it’s just a staple of the writing.
And yes, they watched the Stars without Twilight. It stings, but it’s hardly a betrayal. Twilight lost track of time, and Iron Will forced her to sign authographs. Prior to the meteor shower, when her family kept asking if she was fine with doing the princess activities, she kept insisting that they continue the cruise, despite the uncomfortable position that put her in. I’m not saying the family is blameless, they certainly could’ve handled it better and been more observant, but they’re hardly the inconsiderate monsters some people see them as.
Some also complained about Spike not being there - even though he literally volunteered to fill in for Twilight in her duties. It’s a great Spike moment, it gives a good reason why he’s not there, it acknowledges him as Twilight’s family…and yet people still get mad that he’s not there. I just don’t get it.
Cadance’s speech to Twilight is what I consider her best moment in the series, and I remember most MLP reviewers being very critical of that part in particular…for some reason. Obviously, you’re free to like and dislike any part of the episode, but it’s like…a lot of those people wanted there to be more to Cadance, and this episode adds some depth. And then it seemed like everyone focused on nitpicks about her advice. Which, said advice, is very solid. And the scene is delivered in an appropriately somber tone. Been a while since I’ve watched those reviews back in 2017, but it kinda frustrates me to this day.
