I think I can sum up my main issue with G4’s worldbuilding:

There’s no bigger picture. The world exists almost exclusively as a vehicle for stories about The Mane Six.

And yet in the process it manages to create a much bigger picture than G5 has, as far as I’ve heard.

Not really. G5 actually has an ongoing story, whereas in G4 they were basically making it up as they went.

Not really, but MLP is its own thing, why should we expect it to be anything like the anime and video games we grew up on?

I think the show itself brought everything together and as fans we are or were. We expected a lot from the whole MLP universe franchise since the whole brony scandal.

I don’t get everyone’s obesession with worldbuilding. I thought we watch it for the characters and silce of life elements.

I always felt like the show’s quality tanked whenever they focused more on lore and worldbuilding, which was a lot more prominent in the later seasons

I blame the movie for that, and I mean it is hard to do something like that in just two seasons.

I’m getting flashbacks to when people kept thinking the show was going to do a big exploring equestria season.
Season 6 wasn’t even because of stuff from the show just the name of a toyline.

I watched it for the characters as well but as time went on and based on the fan content I’ve been seeing combined with my overactive imagination that likes to “reimagine” things, I really developed a craving for lore and action. I still watched for the characters but with all the newer supporting characters we’ve been getting each new season, I wanted to see them shine since I figured we already got our fill of mainly Mane Six focused stories. But I guess it was too tall of an order for the writing team.

So I just wasted a decade of my time then?

I feel G5 isn’t really that good at worldbuilding. We only know 4 locations so far. And we only know the barest details of 3 of them. Maretime Bay is better, but that’s because it’s the main setting. Plus, everyone is acting like they’ve come together a lot longer than I would think they have. The first MYM special addresses this, but then it never comes up again, and the ponies seem to be strangely aware of stuff from the other tribes despite being separated for “many moons”.

G5’s lore biggest draw is finding out what the heck happened between G4 and G5. Except the only ones who seem to be interested in finding out is Zipp, and Opaline might know except, but we need to take whatever she says with a few grains of salt.

So, I should clarify, since I lumped a few things together:

G4 is more episodic. The story was being made up as they go. There’s an emphasis on the main characters as individuals. The setting is a fairly inert backdrop that exists for the benefit of the main characters.

G5 is more serialized. The story follows a far clearer arc. There’s an emphasis on the main characters as individuals, and also on character dynamics. The setting is much more reactive, with changes affecting background characters.

I think the Season One premier gave us the wrong idea about what kind of show it would be. But it kept having just enough of a high fantasy element and just enough worldbuilding that we never really snapped out of it.

I liked the worldbuilding IMO, even if some of it felt incomplete and underused. I thought it made the world feel alive and helped exploit the creative ones in the fandom to come up with their own ideas and interpretations of how the world works.

Yes, and as far as I hear G5 still has a shallow world while G4 implied and showed a broader one (albeit with flaws).

Making things up as you go can be surprisingly workable sometimes.

Anyone else getting a bit annoyed with the excessive TYT screencap spam? I don’t mind screencaps, but it’s the same guy literally uploading every frame at this point, and it clogs the feed.
Was screencap spamming bad when FIM was still airing? I don’t remember it being an issue until now.

Do they though? It doesn’t really feel that way to me, at least not in ways that aren’t fixed really quickly and forgotten afterwards in favor acting like Equestria has been unified for quite a while.
