Was being starved not part of her backstory?

It’d make sense, but I don’t remember any indication that Opaline starved or even “made her go to bed without supper”.

Opaline grounding her being her “most severe punishment yet” indicates that Misty wasn’t physically abused or deprived. Just possible emotional abuse.

Hmm yeah. Coin flip on whether there’s some history there or if Misty was thinking poorly on her feet.

I’ll give my thoughts more in-depth later (probably after tomorrow, since I’ll be departing this forum once again until I see the TYT ep), but just on a general basis, I loved Chapter 5 - I’ll have to rewatch to be sure, but I think I place it slightly above Chapter 4.

One thing I will mention right now is that even though there were only two songs, they were both among the best (if not the best) songs we’ve gotten in G5 outside of ANG. Can’t wait to listen to the full songs on that mini album soon, haha

The ANG songs are bangers, the TYT songs are bops, but out of all the songs, Portrait Day gets me in the feels every time.

Deffo fair

I’m back, and I’m happy to say that every episode of Chapter 5 was good. Only just barely missed the mark of being as good as Chapter 4. Misty just completely stole the show, holy hoofness. Although I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about Alphadad, that Halloween special at the end was a gemstone to behold. One of the shiniest moments in the entire series…GETTING TO SEE OPALINE IN MARETIME BAY. :D

I liked today TYT’s episode. And return of the wet manes!

Not a bad episode. Those things Sunny and Windy made are absolutely showing up next time r/place happens.

Decent episode on its own. But I am disappointed that it didn’t follow-up on C5. Most if not every TYT episode following a chapter release usually takes place in the aftermath of the Chapter’s release.

I mean, the episode opened with Windy. Was looking forward to seeing Posey play a role alongside her “bestie”. And we got an appearance of Alphabittle, but his relation to Misty wasn’t referenced.

Lame.

I’m more into G5 than I was into G4 during Seasons 6-9, I’ll say that.

TYT had a fine new episode today, but it wasn’t super captivating to me after the sugar hype buzz from MYM C5. At least it wasn’t just recapping the plot of a chapter finale.

Would Opaline be better if she were written like the Joker to Sunny’s Batman? A villain that’s the antithesis of everything Sunny stands for?

It could be framed as Hope vs. Fear, or Peace vs. Chaos.

I’d have to finish MYM and finish rewatching G4 to know for sure, but I am more excited for the rest of MYM than I am to revisit G4. Having said that, I’ll probably be more excited once I get to seasons 4 and 5.

G5 is doing a lot of things I wish G4 had done.

I think Opaline works. The problem with G4’s two-part episodes was that a villain had very limited time to make an impression. They also suffered from spectacle creep.

What I like about Opaline is that the way she’s written follows the cycle of abuse. Chapter 2 starts with a few minor incidents. Then “The Traditional Unicorn Sleepover” implies that Misty isn’t getting enough to eat. Things culminated in this scene, where we see just how unhinged and abusive Opaline can get.

Then, nothing. We don’t see her in Chapter 3, and she’s a bit of a joke in TYT. We let our guard down. Then Chapter 4 shows us how she gaslights Misty, and how even in a weakened state, she has the power to cut boulders in half. In “Missing the Mark”, we see that she’s willing to kill Sparky.

Then, in Chapter 5, she’s back to being not quite as threatening. In “Cutie Blossom Bash”, she gets bent out of shape over a hairbrush, and in “Mane Smelody”, we can see that her psychological grip on Misty is gone. In “Nightmare on Mane Street”, she isn’t taken seriously at all, and she goes home after stealing Posey’s cutie mark. If the pattern holds, we’re going to see the worst Opaline has to offer in Chapter 6.

They definitely do a much better job building Opaline up and giving more insight to her character. Chapter 5 kicked off with showing just how much of a narcissist she is, 100% confirming that she doesn’t care about Misty at all and has been playing her for a sap, and then in the chapter finale, we find out that she actually planted a Together Tree. Whatever they’re doing with her, it’s fascinating how the storytelling with her gets us to think about her character. Shame we never got something like this in any season of FiM.
