Chapter 4 is, without a doubt, a MASSIVE improvement over the previous chapters.
C4 ep.1 “Bridlewoodstock”: appropriate; very little educational, the troggles are just too stupid.
C4 ep.2 “Top Remodel”: More reminiscent of a TYT episode, interesting. But severely hampered by stiff animation.
C4 ep.3 “The Jinkie Games”: Wild, these Bridlewood unicorns are… just too wild. As if Pinkie’s spirit had taken up residence in them, especially Izzy.
C4 ep.4 “Sunny Side Up”: The episode is really two episodes in one, instructive when it comes to Opaline and her past.
C4 ep.5 “The Manesquerade Ball”: Good, and a little more grown up than the rule in G5, the royal library in Zephyr Heights seemed to have Twilight’s hoofprints all over it from head to toe.
C4 ep.6 “A Little Horse”: Good, Opaline had to work hard on her part to achieve her ambitions.
C4 ep.7 “Missing the Mark”: This isn’t even a final episode, so it means that Hasbro meant seriously that they won’t have “seasons” for the G5. Much faster pace than the other chapters when it comes to the action.
G4 is better than all the chapters that had come before, although the 3d animation is obviously a very big problem. The background is very little detailed - we don’t see transport, new buildings, new scenery, new cities or even new landscapes. So little, that it is a very big problem because the first season of G4 was deeply influenced by a magical background around the ponies. Only a tenth or less of this has so far been seen in the G5. World discovery is completely absent.
Instead, the focus is on social interaction, personality development, the role models and just seven ponies in all - Sunny, Izzy, Hitch, Pipp, Zipp and Misty and their nemesis Opaline. Others like Queen Haven and Alphabittle (it’s possible he knows something when he first saw Misty, given his reaction) had their time in the spotlight.
There are controversies as well; the royal library is unusual in having a ton of books when the ponies are supposed to be ignorant of their past from when Twilight ruled, after Equestria collapsed. The book “Alicorns of the Ancient World” is very interesting, but we see that the MYM writers did everything they can to keep the viewers away from the content and deep insights in contrast to what was the rule in G4.
Celestia and Luna may be partly to blame for Opaline becoming evil, as they treated her poorly when they were living in the city of Skyros - which did not exist in G4, with the possible exception of “The Journal of the Two Sisters”, which depicted a tribe of alicorns, as Opaline suggests that she and the royal sisters cannot be the only alicorns back then. We know that Celestia and Luna came to Equestria when they were just filles, and were raised by their mentor Starswirl.
That could mean that Opaline could be over two thousand years old. What happened to the royal sisters - and Twilight - remain unanswered, although Opaline herself revealed that she lost her magic several hundred moons ago or just a few centuries. C4 ep. 4 has confirmed that the alicorns are immortal.
The New Mane 6 is informally formed, but as Misty has not lost Opaline’s trust the Mane 5 can continue. Sunny chose not to expel Opaline because she realized that it was not possible to draw the authorities in when it comes to an alicorn, and thus left with promises that she will protect her friends (and ponies) from Opaline in the future. Her friends’ support had been crucial during the first battle between the two alicorns. Misty can be the spy for Sunny while Opaline will seek out other dragons.
Regardless, it’s clear that Opaline grows stronger magically over time, but her physical strength is weak. She will get her magic back without stealing other people’s magic - within a couple of decades. She couldn’t wait that long, and wants to steal dragon magic and other magic based on fire. Opaline also revealed that she cannot take the Unity Crystals without having an alicorn’s strength, which Zipp also concluded in her research.
C4 ep.7 was supposed to be the finale, but it won’t be like that, and then it means that the map showing a sea pony can in reality be about the whole of G5. Then the G5 is very dangerously close to the AU stamp as an alternate future after the original G4. And G5 is still childishly more like G3 than G4 in the end.
The biggest problem with MYM is that the MYM team did not cooperate with the TYT team. So C4 should be the last time the MYM team will have the freedom to do as they please on their own.
