I suspect that we will know that in the new series, since the end of the film there is one thing that makes me curious, they lived more than a millennium, everything that happened after season 8 is a mystery.

So does this generation take place in the same universe as G4?

It should still take place in the same universe as G4.
 
Although I still think it’s possible it takes place in an alternate G4 timeline where Twilight didn’t become sole ruler.

Because MLP is one of those franchises that have carried over character names and place names through generations.

Nope, the mane 6 are legends in g5 times, so g5 is like a direct continuation of g4.

So let me get this straight.  
They’re now in a technologically advanced Equestria. But the flow of magic has largely faded from existence?  
And the Ponies are race feuding again right?

More or less. From what I gather, the ponies separated for whatever the reason, but up until recently magic disappeared and now unicorns and pegasi are downgraded.

Anyways, I’m not gonna watch it when it premiered, I’m gonna watch it the day after with my friend and we’re gonna do a blind reaction together. It’s gonna be really fun.
