If this gen is going to be more adventurous, there is going to be antagonist or villains. What type of redemption would you like to see, if there is any?

An arrogant prince who is trying to retake his kingdom by getting money for his army and is forced to stay with our heroes for some time. But over time he learns about compassion for others and starts to be a leader for good. You could even ship him with one of our heroes.

I remember reading somewhere on here someone wanted Spike to be that for the next gen.

That’s not to far off from what I had suggested. Spike would be a spy, using his title of prince to act as an ambassador but in reality is gathering intelligence for an invasion planned by dragons.

I think that would be a great step up for his character. Instead of him being a punching bag.

Certainly interesting possibilities for him.

There’s a piece of writing advice that says
 
“You don’t really know what your story is about until you finish writing it.” So to help, another piece of advice is to have some kind of overarching question that can inform your writing decisions.
 
For Season One, the question seemed to be “Who are these characters, and why should people buy toys of them care about them?”
 
I think the question that really captured the imagination of the fandom was “Why couldn’t she save Luna?”, and I ultimately think they did a good job answering, even if you have to really put the pieces together yourself.
 
I’m just hoping G5 has some good, open-ended questions, so that the writers don’t write themselves into a corner.

Who are these characters? What is this world like? One tends to inform the other so the question for G5 is, which do you answer first? Do you make the characters and build a world that makes sense for them to be in or do you make the world and build characters that make sense to be in it?  
After that you have the next round of questions. What do these characters desire? What obstacles must they overcome to achieve their goals? Do they all have to same goal they’re working towards? Is the obstacle a physical or abstract force?
 
A lot of questions with a lot of possible answers.

Hmm…G4 focused on chracters, as did Tales I think, while G1 and to a lesser extent G3 were more about the world with relatively ibterchangable chracters. I think the former method has worked a bit better so far.

How about Rarity returning as a side character. But with a few misanthropic characteristics. And I guess you could say exagerations. What if she truly hated her village thinking it was a place of narrow mindedness. And what if her generosity is not only that but humanitarian idealism. She could be an idealist who wants to make a more beautiful world and she sees Ponyville as people who don’t do their best. Instead of fixing the highways, they’re content to leave it unpaved. Instead of spending money on art and literature, they spend it on parties. And while proclaiming that they are down to earth common folk, they look down on the poor and the beggers and mules and zebras. So Rarity + Twilight.
 
As for Rarity she has a bit of a savior complex thinking she was the Filly of Prophesy to bring about an Age of Enlightenment on the world of Equestria. For now she makes fashion but she strives for greater things one day.
 
Man, this sounds like an anti hero/villian. But I’m pretty sure a character arc could make her into a nicer mare.

I would kinda like the g4 main six returning as baddies. Well, except maybe applejack, I think she fits better as a mentor. But I could totally imagine Rainbow Dash or Twilight filling the role convincingly.

I can see Rainbow Dash as someone that creates whirlwinds for her own amusement.  
Twilight could be a morally dubious Mage, experimenting with magics she might not be able to control or contain.  
Rarity is a dictator because she’s a drama queen.  
Pinkie Pie… A mad hatter type?  
and Fluttershy… I got nothing.

Fluttershy could just be the split personality type bad guy. Or have an “imaginary friend” that’s a lot more assertive and mean.

the Pony POV Series had her have a brief stint as a “world sucks, gonna remake it” type of villain, specifically ala Kriemhild Gretchen from Madoka Magica, or at least something of a similar vein it’s a long time since I last read that part.
