Very interesting, so Discord has become old as I had assumed based on the evidence that has come so far, and become mentally unbalanced after Fluttershy’s death - which is now probably confirmed as the first of the Mane 6’s deaths. And the cover of # 6 suggests that Twilight may be dead, but it seems that her feathers are a sign that Sunny is her successor, and that the Unity Crystals are linked to the Mane 6.
Could it be that the Mane 6 and the Unity Crystals are magically linked? We saw Rainbow Dash`s “signature” when the magic was released in the movie. And there are many indications that the crystals are a kind of “door” that can lead to the place from which the magic came to the ponies. Maybe Mane 6 after their death has ascended to the elsewhere and the crystals may be the way to them. That may explain Discord’s state of mind and obsession.
This is very big. Twilight as alicorn can probably return, but probably only to help Sunny. And anyway, SOMETHING has happened, which makes Discord erratic, wiped out the middle Equestria, threw pony magic into extreme turbulence that may have driven the non-ponies to flee, and ensured that the ponies suffered collective memory loss.
This is more than Discord and Mane 6.

Yes, it is possible. The Unity Crystals are very important, because they not only symbolize the three pony tribes, return magic to the ponies, they chose Sunny as the future alicorn (who seems to be inhibited by her emotions) and the successor to Twilight, they are linked to the magic in all the ponies by receiving internal emotional magic from individuals - and releasing pony-related magic into the dimension with Equestria. Sometimes it seems like they are alive with their own consciousness, as seen when they responded to Sunny’s friendship talk with the pony leaders. And they react to magical imbalance, emotional negativity and have a clear connection with Sunny who does not yet know it herself.
The Unity crystals act as a door between dimensions, and when corrupt magic arose, a portal was opened to an unidentified dimension where ponies can survive, and from where the earth pony magic came out to the lighthouse, from there it spreads to all earth ponies. Zipp had a point when she asks where the magic came from, and we know here that the magic comes from the ponies themselves in G4, but that they are also connected - as seen with the elsewhere when Twilight became an alicorn. It’s as if the magic had been channeled through the Unity crystals in front of all the ponies, and if Twilight had done this, why? And more importantly, how?
The case of Discord and the pegasi crystal, the fact that the Unity crystals are very important and linked to Twilight’s fate, may indicate that the Mane 6 - Rarity, Applejack, Pinkie, Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy - are involved. The cover of # 1 is possibly more than just showing the generational change from Mane 6 to Mane 5. We know from MYM special that the mysterious alicorn wants pony magic, but that the crystals denied her, and these refused to be activated when these are put together , only when Sunny spoke a language Mane 6 understands.
It seems that the Mane 6 is watching over the future and the Mane 5, and Sunny will probably find out even if only Twilight will meet her and maybe only once. If Discord learns about it, and thus listens to Sunny, it can make him feel joy. For Fluttershy is still not gone.
But an external force is still out there, we do not know why the pony magic had become so unstable.

People assume the status quo of g5 is hunkie dori like g4 when the narrative clearly states since foalhood, all ponies are led to believe the other tribe is the enemy. Even Izzy herself stated she knows this later on but decides to disrespect this status quo anyway. That’s the problem.

People see these characters through rose tinted glasses but when someone disagrees with their confirmation bias, they lose their shit. Then someone posted Izzy should learn a lesson about personal space. Guess the rose tinted glasses lost its tint, huh?

I agree. In part because it almost serves as a kind of back door redemption story both for her, and potentially for Tirek and Chrysalis (if she’s out, odds are they’re out as well).
I imagine the three of them getting released from their imprisonment due to whatever massive disaster has caused Equestria to lose magic. They find a disorganized group of Pegasus survivors at the enclave that will become Zephyr Heights, and basically take charge of them to regroup and survive in what is - let’s face it - basically a post-apocalyptic world. While they initially do it just for their own petty reasons, in time they do earn respect as leaders, and wind up founding the Zephyr Heights we know today.

Except that’s an oversimplification.
- Earth Ponies are taught that the other two tribes are the enemy.
- Unicorns are taught that pegasi will steal your luminescence, and that earth ponies are dumb, lazy, and smell bad. Izzy is genuinely surprised to learn that earth ponies hate unicorns.

Its Occam’s razor. Why are you assuming things not stated in the movie? It was stated several times by multiple tribe members. Not just from the main characters but from Alphabittle’s perspective, from Queen Haven’s perspective, from the pegasus guards, from the the earth pony towns folk. Nothing suggests the three tribes intermingled. Their societies don’t interact. And there’s reason for that. They hate and fear each other so they created borders.

What part of the movie did you think a unicorn would ever be welcomed in Maretime Bay if she walks in there? Answer that. You can’t because nothing suggests it. And Izzy knows this because other unicorns know this. You go into a place you’re not welcomed, you’re gonna cause trouble. That’s just a basic fact.

Besides, how do you know their status quo is misinformation? There’s a dark alicorn in MyM that clearly intends to use magic malevolently. How do we know the three tribes didn’t really fight each other in some war in their past? How do we know they didn’t use their magic to harm each other in their past?

As you can see, that’s confirmation bias in effect. People like to believe the g5 ponies history is a lie or is wrong because in g4 they were friends so its okay for Izzy to walk into the territory of another pony tribe. But We don’t know if something caused a falling out between the tribes at some point between g4 and g5 for real so they became enemies. Your confirmation bias is making you assume things again while at the same time, the movie literally confirms they’re taught in school that Earth Ponies kicked the butts of the other tribes in some kind of fight. Was that true? Who knows? But its at the start of the movie used for exposition and nothing so far contradicts it.

It is a very good and logical idea. The fate of the terrible trio did not sit well with many, and it is possible that Twilight may have tried to reform them without success because they were too bitter and too dangerous as long as there is magic. But if the magic disappeared, it is possible that the petrification spell - since pony magic was used by the royal siblings - would disappear. This means that Cozy, Tirek and Chrysalis could not remain petrified into the G5 in any case. Moreover, IDW comics had shown that Chrysalis managed to escape, and her fate may be unknown. But if Cozy, Chrysalis and Tirek wake up in the aftermath of a disaster and find out that the magic had disappeared, there is little they can do beyond adapt to the new conditions.
Then it is possible that Cozy, who had already demonstrated leadership skills and strong persuasive abilities, quickly took control of the disorganized pegasias and then helped them. Tirek is likely to return home in his old age and it is possible that G5 will show his homeland, where the memory of him may have survived.
Chrysalis could either be gone because she had escaped beforehand, or forced to find her people. Fortunately for the changelings, we know that they are not dependent on pony magic, and can feed on emotional energy from all sources of life - so the loss of pony magic will not affect them. But they will lose all interest in the ponies.
If Cozy becomes the first queen of Zephyr Heights with her own experiences and adventures in which she learns to be good, despite her lack of scruples, and then manipulates the pegasi into believing she can fly, it’s very good. Then it means that Zipp and Pipp are descendants of one of the greatest villains in Equestria’s history. Maybe Cozy may have met the mysterious alicorn and refused to submit to her. It will not be surprising if there are no statues of her and all her descendants until the magic is returned - and the statue tradition of the earth ponies.
Tirek, for his part, can help his people, because even if it seems that only pony magic had disappeared, the collapse of the world community will lead to huge problems for everyone. His knowledge of drawing magic from his surroundings and his background as a prince may have attracted the centaurs and gargoyles to him. In his old age, Tirek will serve his people in the end.
If this does not appear in the G5 as a satisfactory solution to one of the biggest controversies in the G4, it will be very surprising.
