MLP G5 Discussion and Speculation Thread

I would legit love to see some more family dynamics. My personal favorite episodes are the sisters episodes, I wish we got to see more of the main cast (especially Rarity) hang out with their parents and siblings.

One thing I always I disliked about G4 was how cliquish it seemed and how they formed unnecessary and somewhat forced dichotimies (like Rarity trying to decorate a tree instead of doing community service something that was only put there to make Sleepless in Ponyville conflict work) in order to make an episode conflict.
 
Like I always felt like Fluttershy and Rarity, while I love it in hindsight, I feel like the only reason why they were put as BFFs at the beginning is because they the “girly” ponies even though they have completely opposite personalities.
 
I would’ve much rather Fluttershy and AJ be best friends because they’re more nature inclined and more motherly instead or RD and Rarity being best friends at the beginning of their love of ambition. It would be a bit subversive and it would make sense and then later on you would have Fluttershy bond with Rarity over their love of beauty LATER.
 
Honestly this isn’t really a problem it’s just my preference. But I would be interested in G5 having relationships being a little less obvious and more based on more important traits instead of just “dirtiness vs sophistication”.

I think that if they were kept as main characters in G5, Rarity and Fluttershy probably would only be friends because they were supposed to be from the same place. That makes me wonder if everyone from the actual main cast of G5 will meet each other for the first time in the movie or if some of them knew each other before.

There is an advantage when you don’t know how all the cards of your show will work to begin in the middle. And then eventually give a flashback episode to when they first joined up. Just like in Teen Titans. Although it would probably not be as emotionally resonant. But it could leave the backstories open to future imagination.

It’s an interesting experiment, but not without it’s own downsides. So I guess it comes down to whether you feel FIM’s dynamic falls under “if it ain’t broken, don’t try and fix it” or not.

Yep that’s true. I guess it’s not really about fixing things in the end as much as wanting to try an experimental new idea. But whatever they do, as long as the characters and their interactions make for great episodes then the means to get there don’t matter as much. Whatever they wish to do just make sure it’s awesome.

Well, there were a whole lot of family eps - Rarity’s parents were something of an exception in being overlooked.

Certainly you can play with it. Although each of the Manes have similarites and differences with each other, so you could always say a certain pairing was “obvious” or “subversive”, I think. Rarishy feels pretty natural to me, in that early Fluttershy needs someone more social to speak for her and Rarity likes to help others and nurture beutiful things.

Possible, but it could also just mean disappointing everyone. When I’ve seen this done before it hasn’t always worked so well…

Yes, it’s true. I personally think only the main characters of the same species will know each other (since I don’t think Ponyville, Cloudsdale and the Everfree Forest, possible settings for G5, are going to be big cities), but the movie may surprise us.

Yeah, honestly AJ probably would just be happy with Fluttershy being a shy recluse. But Rarity would try to open her up, without the brashness of Rainbow Dash. And Fluttershy could still relate more to Rarity’s more feminine pursuits. And a bit more softness than Dash too.
 
Rarity’s not necessarily the sweetest pony but she is a lot more empathetic than she might seem at first glance.

She’s a social weaver - empathy, at least the comprehension part, is part of the game. And because she’s a nice one, she doesn’t just understand but also cares.
 
What do you think about the Twilight/Applejack relationship? Would it qualify as a “less obvious” pair?

I think so. I think of Twilight and AJ’s relationship like this: Twilight is the young idealistic rookie lieutenant and AJ is more experienced down to earth sergent.
 
I think AJ could teach Twilight a lot about leadership like with Spike for instance. AJ seems to be the real leader of the Apple family after all.

I think the only friendship dynamic that made sense was Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash since they were childhood friends. Applejack and Rarity where opposites and so vindictive towards each other at times that it seems that the only reason why they were together was because they had common friends. Pinkie Pie is an exception since almost everybody knew her and she has a friendly personality. Twilight seem to be fine with everyone, but she was mostly paired up with Pinkie, and sometimes Rainbow Dash. RD and AJ had their rivalry. In my opinion Twilight should have been with AJ more, sense they’re so alike.

I would like a comic where the rest of the Mane Six are being crazy and AJ and Twi are like:  
We’re surrounded by idiots. And Fluttershy relictantly agrees.
 
Those three are like the normal ponies. The others are the eccentric ones.

Pretty much, yes. It’s one of the relationships I really wish had been explored more in the show. I even ship them sometimes.

Now you see, a lot of us found that “childhood friends” thing a bit hard to swallow. They certainly didn’t act like it in early episodes like Dragonshy - Rainbow seemed to find Fluttershy as annoying as she did Pinkie in the prolouge of Griffon the Brush Off.
 
AJ and Rarity, as the only Ponyvliie natives, could have used an episode about their past - for all their joint focus, we never saw that side of them. I’m especially interested in the time when AJ still dreamed of Manehattan.

The only thing that could disappoint me about G5 would be the dire attempt to be like G4. And even if Pony Life is a little bit funny, it’s not something I hope for from G5. It would really be unfortunate if Hasbro were so blind and naive in this respect.

AJ personality to me was “the straight man” plus she was the only normal one in terms of personality.Twilight always had this “Hermione vibe” with a dash of Harry Potter plot. Off topic, but Starlight had a great main character personality. She’s was hotheaded, smart-mouth, and she was very determined. If she was switched with Twilight in terms of character roles, I could see her going head to head with Rainbow Dash.

I can see Rarity being jealous of AJ because AJ probably was able to go to Manehattan because of her family connections.
 
I always had the headcanon that Rarity’s family used to somewhat poor especially compared to AJ’s. And Rarity looked at contempt at AJ because AJ was granted everything from her family where Rarity had to start fresh, you clearly see Rarity’s family is not really sophistacted and kind of crude so Rarity work for everything in her life.
 
And then to see AJ have the nerve to go back to mediocrity when she was given a chance to climb ahead while Rarity was stuck making dresses for her school and hanging out with ponies who didn’t understand her passion.
 
I also theorize Rarity might have been not as appreciated when she was young as shown with when her car lost to Derpy.
 
So she sees herself as an ambitious underdog and surprisingly she think AJ as simply someone who inherited what she had whereas Rarity had to start fresh.

Yeah, they feel the same way to me. Well, besides Starlight… I think a show with her as lead might have a quite different feel, especially if she retains her tendency to collect misfits around herself.

Definitely a dynamic which could have driven an episode - perhaps in place of PPOV, since the moral might be similar.

This is honestly perfect 👍. I always had a soft spot for the opposite trope. Funny thing is Aj and Rarity have the most in common in away like them both having younger siblings. I wished we could have seen more of them.@Latecomer  
I think it would be great if gen 5 had a character that was most like Starlight in terms of personality.

Well, working them into the cast from the beginnig might be interesting, yes. (But then, I sometimes struggle to grasp Starlight’s personality. What points do you see as key to it?)

Starlight personality to me was she was hotheaded, she wasn’t the smartest but she was cunning/savvy. She is also not the most purest pony and she seemed more like a dysfunctional adult compared to other ponies. Shes very determined once she has her mind set on something. She was also very brief, to the point where she’s kinda rude. If we had a pony who was more like her ( without the rushed redemption arc) it would be fun.

Hmm… not sure if Hasbro would be on board with a more roguish lead, but perhaps. Or she could make for an antagonist/troublemaker character.

Yeah just basically the trouble character or the smart aleck. The gen 5 cast should also have the level headed character to help, not necessarily smart but the character uses common sense. The group could also have a gullible character. I could definitely see some misadventures with that.
