I’ve been writing a TED Talk that judges which is better: a given Mane Six member, or her G5 counterpart. I cannot foresee this being controversial!

Here’s the rough draft for the comparison. “Better” does not mean “a better person” or “you’re better for liking them. It refers to how well they’re conceived and used.
Twilight Sparkle vs Sunny Starscout
I probably like Twilight more than Sunny, but that has more to do with familiarity. The problem with Twilight is that she’s a bit too special, and just ends up being inert, and a bit disingenuous. She comes from a relatively well-off family. She’s exceptionally good with magic, and is the personal protégé of Celestia. She’s the chosen one, and makes a group of friends with very little effort. She lacks any kind of long-term struggle; coasting through life as a series of things happen to her. Her fear of failure is less endearing when you consider that she’s never had to deal with long-term consequences of failing. Twilight could basically do anything she put her mind to.
The premise of Sunny seems to be “What if we took Twilight and flipped her on her head?”. At the start of the generation, Sunny is an outcast with no parent and a diminishing circle of friends. She has to go on a journey and re-evaluate her beliefs in order to re-unite ponykind. She earns the right to represent the three pony tribes, and this is reflected in her alicorn status. Past that, she struggles with being a good activist and with being “The Alicorn”. She doesn’t feel like the main character, but this ties into the idea that being a good activist means not making everything about her. She’s much more endearing, and there’s a much stronger sense that she needs her friends.
She’s hamstrung by there just not being that much injustice to fight after The Movie. Compare MYM and TYT to something like “Recess”, which has a recurring theme of “Freedom versus Tyranny”.
Rainbow Dash vs Zipp Storm
I think Rainbow Dash peaked as a character in Sonic Rainboom, and they just didn’t know what to do with her after. Zipp Storm is one of the best characters they’ve ever done. She goes from being rebellious and representing counter-culture, to stepping up and being responsible for protecting the new culture. She’s also a much more rounded character. Anything you would want to do with Rainbow Dash, from taking responsibility to learning how to be a good older sibling, Zipp did better than Rainbow. She also has something to lose.
Rarity vs Pipp Petals
Rarity could have carried her own show; one where she travels around the world, looking for exotic dress materials and solving mysteries. In Season One, she shows that she’s perfectly capable of running a business and mingling with nobility, so there’s nowhere for her to really go. Nevertheless, she’s always a fun character.
I ended up liking Pipp way more than I expected to. Mane Melody ended up being everything Carousel Boutique should have been. Carousel Boutique gave Rarity something to do offscreen, but because Pipp has employees and customers to play off, we got to see Mane Melody in action. Pipp ends up being a more versatile character; she’s a vehicle for exploring the power of media, as well as the pros and cons of being “plugged in”.
Pinkie Pie vs Izzy Moonbow
This one is probably the most subjective. Pinkie was my favorite character in Season One, and Izzy is by far the best character in The Movie. While Izzy is never quite as good as she was in The Movie, Pinkie could be downright awful in seasons 2-4. There was an art to writing Pinkie in Season One that was never quite recaptured. I find Izzy to be more authentically vulnerable, which makes her more endearing.
Applejack vs Hitch Trailblazer
Applejack is a character that gets better the older you get. Out of The Mane Six, she’s the only one that has things going on in her life that provide a consistent source of stories. She’s also the only one with a social circle outside the core group. She has loved ones to look after, and the most to lose out of The Mane Six.
Unfortunately, Hitch’s character is hamstrung by the fact that no actual crime ever takes place in Maretime Bay. He’s fine, but he ends up relegated to “Dragon Dad”. Which is endearing, but a bit linear.
Fluttershy vs Misty Brightdawn
Misty is one of the most compelling characters they’ve ever done. She flat-out has the best redemption arc. But she’s up against Fluttershy. Fluttershy isn’t just a character I consider “good”. I’m working on a whole TED Talk about her being an example of how to write a complex, dynamic character. The fact that Fluttershy manages to have a proper arc over the course of nine seasons is remarkable. While Misty is great, she’s mostly compelling because of her circumstances in MYM, and does fall off a bit after Opaline’s defeat.

Not helping him is the fact that he’s a boy in a girl’s show. Sure he shows his softer side all the time, but this limitation is most apparent anytime G5 did a sleep over episode and Hitch could not be in it for obvious reasons.

Only one I really disagree with here is “Applejack vs. Hitch”. First of all, I consider Hitch to be more like Fluttershy than Applejack. Second, Hitch changes more as a character than Applejack. The “Dragon Dad” aspect of his character is super underrated, giving him more development on top of the development he already had in the movie as well as a consistent source of stories of things going on in his life. I have a whole essay backing up my points on why I think Hitch is a very underrated character.

So yeah, we have two Fluttershy counterparts and no Applejack.

Ok apart from anu implied sexual reasons, why couldn’t he be allowed?
Like friend groups have had sleepovers (especially kids) with mixed genders so I don’t see why Hitch can’t take part

It’s kind of a shame since characters like Sunny and Hitch are quite good in the movie and lose a lot of their steam afterwards, but if you asked me to compare using all of each characters animated showings:

Twilight > Sunny - And I thought Twilight was less interesting after her arc concluded…
Zipp > Rainbow - Dash kinda sucks and Zipp is one of G5’s best characters
Misty > Fluttershy - Misty is Best Pony
Applejack = Hitch - TBH I think both suffer from underutilized potential and AJ’s constant forced stupidity is as annoying as Hitch’s post-movie lameness
Pinkie > Izzy - If TYT didn’t exist Izzy would take it with a bullet, but Izzy at her worst is far too common for my liking
Pipp > Rarity - Yeah, I’m just as surprised as you

Hitch is a little more like Fluttershy than he is Applejack, but Misty is nothing like Applejack, so Hitch kinda got stuck with AJ by default.

Honestly, I don’t see why he couldn’t…they’re not middle-schoolers, I’m sure they’re confortable enough with each other that Hitch could simply sleep in a different room after they’d spent the night together. There’s no way that lighthouse doesn’t have a 2nd sleeping area.

Even Black, White & Blue had Hitch and Sparky spend time at the sleepover and only left when it was time to go to sleep, which is better than nothing.

Okay I will try to write without seeing the other comments of other users:
Okay I will try to write without seeing the other comments of other users:
For Rarity vs Pipp: Surprisingly I think in an equine world Pipp’s manestyling buisiness makes more sense to me. Clothes for ponies are only what you wear on special occasions unlike actual human fashion.
Rarity I used to like for her being the creative one, but its not focused on a lot. I’m starting more and more to realize I wish she was more about creativity.
For Hitch, I like him in the movie more than the series. I know they wanted to emphasize his father role with Sparky but I feel like it was at the expense of being a sort of father/older brother figure to the Mane Five. I feel like they could have done way more to have him jive with the other ponies.
With Twilight vs Sunny, I find them an interesting contrast. Twilight has a sort of elite background and grooming and yet she has a fairly average personality. Whereas Sunny has a more mundane origin but a more extraordinary activist mindset and ambition.
I guess personally I find Sunny more intriguing as a character. Sunny to me has a personality that is dynamic and I can actually see her being a princess. Twilight doesnt have as much dynamism.
Its also one reason I miss Sunnys disruptive dynamic personality from the movie. I guess wanted to see Sunny to be more active and even forceful. I guess thats what intrigued me about her.
For G4 vs G5 characters. I like the concepts for G5 more since I find G4s to sometimes be too archetypcal and G5 blends charactics together. I think the personalities of G5 fit more with an epic adventure though sometimes the execution could be rough.
Still I do appreciate the G4 characters in their own way.
Sorry if this was a rambly mess of a reply. I just wanted to get some thoughts out before this becomes irrelevant.
edit: Tbh I dont know a lot about Sparky so Im just neutral on him since I dont know enough to make a conclusion.

Very much this. I recall some Alignment chart where Sunny was placed as “chaotic good” as opposed to “neutral/lawful good”, and I agree with that placement from a movie perspective. She traded a lot of her ANG personality for the smoothie thing.
Also I don’t see it brought up much, but Sunny just had a really nice model in the movie. I don’t know if it was the expressions they used or what, but I think her model had the biggest downgrade from ANG to MYM, and that’s including Izzy.

Movie Hitch was still better then MYM/TYT Hitch
I don’t believe in separating the characters through the movie and shows. The characters are all essentially the same throughout the series discounting the development they receive. Izzy always acted somewhat like Pinkie Pie too, you can’t tell me that the way she acted during her debut in the movie wasn’t Pinkie Pie-like.
It’s kind of a shame since characters like Sunny and Hitch are quite good in the movie and lose a lot of their steam afterwards
Sunny and Hitch are awesome after the movie. What they do against Opaline is way cooler than anything they do in the movie to me, honestly.

Interesting. I’ll say it is fun to see Hitch have his goofy sides mixed with seriousness. Heck even TYT had it where he caught the animals and still arrested them but was still kind to them. Or how he fed a thief while he was in prison. I guess its an interesting contrast between his lawful side and his hospitable side.

I know everyone compares Izzy to Pinkie and I get the similarities, things is Izzy in the movie felt like a tonned down Pinkie Pie, which I liked.
I like Pinkie, when she’s tonned down. Pinkie Pie imo can get really annoying real fast, which is why I liked Izzy becuase imo she’s like Pinkie but a lot less annoying. Its why I’m not very fond of how she acts in a lot of TYT stuff, she started to remind me of Pinkie’s more annoying moments
@Dragonpone
I can get why they chose the models for MYM since it would be a lot cheaper abd they probably had less staff working on it, it really does feel like a downgrade compared to the movie

It’s because Izzy tends to be the go-to for saying that a G5 character in the movie was much different than how they were in the shows. Hitch is also not very different because he acts like a goof in the movie too, but that’s beside the point. Regardless, the reason for the perceived differences with the characters is because TV shows are structured differently than movies. A gag comedy is set up much differently than an adventure story.

…Of course, because TV shows have lower budgets than movies.

I already said it before but i know that Hitch had goofy moments in the movie (i still love the “Your child is safe ma’am” gag), but imo i feel like MYM/TYT pushed the goofy side too much and he came out looking pretty lame

I still don’t get why big budget cgi movies have downgraded 3d models in their tv shows.
Like, it’s a 3d model. It already exists. It’s not like flash rigs or hand drawn, where you need to recreate it every time/whenever you need a new angle.
