My thoughts are based on how pegasus flight is also magic, and that beforehand it could easily be thought that pegasi didn't need magic to fly. I'm thinking something similar could also be said about alicorn agelessness.
 
EDIT: And it also doesn't matter whether or not the alicorn is born an alicorn, either.
