@The Smiling Pony
Perhaps the crown granted the wearer immortality or stronger magic? We’ve seen how Trixie was corrupted and became somewhat cruel towards other ponies, though not as cruel as Sombra, maybe not yet because the amulet only reached it’s early stages of corruption on the wearer. Trixie was gradually grew crueler the longer she wore the amulet.
Sombra may have been corrupted in a similar way, but was corrupted beyond redemption due to prolonged possession of the crown. The crown was sealed along with him. He may have been a unicorn who seeked power for greed or he must have been a benevolent unicorn who originally desperately seeked power for good intentions, but was unaware of the corrupting influence of the crown.
It is possible that Sombra was already evil to begin with, the crown only contributed to the growth of his evil.
Why didn’t Cadence use the same crown? They share the same kingdom, don’t they? Ignoring the fact that Cadence stole the kingdom from it’s rightful ruler and then killed him, shouldn’t she at least have the courtesy to wear the same crown? She is still wearing her Equestrian one in Games Ponies Play.
King Sombra’s crown was destroyed with him, and the Crystal Empire seemed to be annexed into Equestria when Cadance took it over.
Here’s a question: Was King Sombra originally a unicorn, or was he some kind of modified crystal pony? That horn of his seemed to be made out of negative emotion crystals.
For that matter, was the old Empire royal family made of unicorns? King Sombra was never said to be an usurper or invader, so he could easily have been the rightful ruler.
King Sombra’s crown is actually Object 538 of 538 of the remaining Objects - Never bring them together, or else, awesome sideburns and sombreros for everyone.
@Sjogre
Regarding his horn, I always had the headcanon that its blood red because at some point as a young stallion, he stabbed another pony to death with it, in the process of becoming a powerful, evil bastard. (Whether it was the start of the path to power or the path to evil, I haven’t really decided yet.)
@Ebalosus
Dude. The Shadows. I mean, c’mon, obviously the Alicorns are Vorlon-Horsies, there’s no way our crabby phasing Darwinist friends wouldn’t want in on Equestria. XD
Why is his horn curved? Its another thing I’ve always been wondering. He doesn’t look like ay unicorn from Equestria. He looks more like a Kirin or a classical unicorn. Then again, he’s from ancient times and might not be from Equestria. He’s not a crystal pony, so he might not be native there. Where is he from?
I think Sombra is a pony who long lost his soul to the evil of the crown. The only thing driving him is the corruption itself which it’s only ambition is power and cruelty, though he still has intelligence. Perhaps that can explain why he didn’t speak much and was hellbent on retaking his empire.
@Wing8492
The episodes also never said he wasn’t an usurper. And the “Demon Crown” could be the thing that helped him take over the Crystal Empire. Sombra must been an outsider who managed to take power of the Empire.
@Rainbow Dash
Well, he was able to regenerate his horn. BUT, his horn that fell of didn’t regrow into another Sombra, instead turned into dark crystals. Though, Sombra was able to appear wherever there was sufficient amount dark crystals. Just like how General Locke from Dragonball GT was able to become one with anything that was metal.
I have a feeling that the crown is very much like the one in Cave Story. And Sombra likely the type to have found a way to cheat death. Some sort of spell or something.
I think I remember McCarthy saying Sombra didn’t turn out exactly how she thought he would. Whether that means she’ll give him another chance or not, who knows.
