All three were fun to watch for me. Granted, Mirror Magic has it’s flaws, but I like shorts and specials that allow me to turn off my brain and enjoy what’s presented to me.

After rewatching them in English, I have to say I really enjoyed Mirror Magic the most, for what it was.
It’s a darn shame it wasn’t longer, but I suppose I should be glad it at least happened.

Okay, so I reached the infamous “Starlight giving advice to Sunset” scene.
…okay. I can’t really judge this by “Does it make sense for Sunset to be having this dilemma?” since I haven’t seen Legend of Everfree yet. My knowledge of the issue has this problem making sense to me since Sunset has been a more somber person in the past, prone to worrying. It’s part of where her great empathy comes from I feel. So I guess her worrying about this makes sense to me.
But mainly, Starlight gave advice, but it wasn’t the kind of motherly type of advice Sunset gives. It was more just that Starlight had a detatched view of the situation and was more lighthearted about everything, and Sunset, being the kind empathetic person she is, was able to take on board what Star said and get something useful out of it. I certainly didn’t feel like the special was trying to say Starlight was smarter than Sun.
But I don’t know. That’s just my two cents.

The issue is that it makes Starlight feel more special. Here she is giving advice to someone who in many ways is her older and more experience counterpart and then later on, she’s there saving the day. It makes her feel very important. If they had had Starlight get trapped in the mirror instead then this probably wouldn’t have been as big an issue.

And that’s the thing. As a starlight fan i actually think the focus of this special is Sunset.
Like, the starlight specialness thing. I get it. I do. But the situations where she gets to save the day and whatever always feel so… specialized. I don’t feel like star could unilaterally solve any situation given to her better than anypony else. Just that situations are written where she could be helpful. If that makes sense?
Like, to where an back again. To me there was nothing there that star did that i couldn’t see the cast doing. Star was just lucky Chrysalis didn’t target her. It’s not saying starlight is better to me because the situation is so circumstantial. Compare that to, say, the rainboom. That’s a task only Rainbow dash could accomplish.

It’s basically the writing favoring Starlight to be the one to save the day.

I guess to me i find there’s a difference between a character being the only hope because they’re the only one who isn’t incompetent,and them being the only hope because of the specific situation.
Like i didn’t think the cast were incompetent here or in to where and back again. The situation blindsided them and starlight was granted an opening to deal with it. That openig hadnothing to do with starlight’s worth or the other character’s incompetence. It was just how the dice fell because that was the story they wanted to tell.
