Derpy is a cheerful pony who has strabismus and is a bit inarticulate and clumsy, but she isn’t actually dumb.

Lily Longsocks is a half-orphan. She’s living alone in a house in Ponyville because her father, Captain Emerald Longsocks, is out at sea most of the time. She has rendered all attempts at putting her into an orphanage futile so far. Emerald Longsocks is rumoured to be crazy wealthy, and he always supplies his daughter with more than enough money whenever he visits her. Also, her name is actually much longer.

In Equestria magic is relatively limited. Magic can do some amazing things but those feats require a lot of magical power and there’s never enough for everyone who would like to use it.

That is why some unicorns have teleportation, but moving goods and services to market, and ordinary travel, require railroads and even pony-drawn carts on dirt roads. There are magical healing spells and potions, but they are rare and there are things magic just can’t do. Equestria has hospitals, doctors, nurses, dentists, whose jobs are very much like they are in our world, because magic can’t do everything for everyone. There’s just not enough magic to go around, even in a land where magic raises the sun and moon every day.

An ancient traditional pegasus mating ritual is to ask for assistance preening. It’s so old that modern pegasi have largely forgotten it–but alicorns remember.

Pegasus anatomy is a bit odd in that their preening oil glands are located just behind the main wing joints on either side of the barrel rather than a single one on their butts, where birds have theirs. Their preening oil is semisolid, like that of waterfowl, and gives their feathers highly water resistant properties so long as they apply it regularly during the preening process. If they don’t, their feathers become disorderly and dull-looking, and can even become brittle and fall out, just as happens to most species of birds. Some pegasi claim that their preening oil, when applied to their coats, makes them better insulators and makes them more resistant to cold, but scientific research suggests it’s more a matter of the preening oil making the topmost layer of their coats water resistant and keeping the coat nearer their skin dry in cold wet weather.

In “Read it and Weep”, Rainbow Dash’s X-ray showed the bone broken completely in two. In real life that sort of injury usually takes about 6-8 weeks to fully heal. Yet Rainbow Dash was in the hospital for only “a few days”, and instructed to refrain from flying for “a few days” after that (for a total recovery time of what had to be less than two weeks).

So it would appear that healing magic at least is readily available - it just doesn’t offer instant gratification like what you see in games.

Well, we don’t rightly know that they were in any real danger. Perhaps losing to the villain still would have simply meant getting kicked back out of the comic, but with the knowledge that you lost.

Though you’re totally right with respect to the Alicorn Amulet. The asshole who sold it to Trixie is the real villain of “Magic Duel”.

My new headcanon, the guy Spike bought the magic comic from cursed it because Spike kept whining about the uselessness of Humdrum.

Hey, if I got my hands on what is essentially Matrix-level virtual reality, only to be thrust into the game as essentially a passive observer, I’d also be sorely disappointed.

Though one would think Spike wouldn’t be as useless as he thought he was. His knowledge of the comic universe in question should include the villain’s abilities, fighting style, and methods by which the heroes previously defeated her. He could have been a valuable source of tactical advice.

And were he not throwing himself a pity party he likely would have. He proved himself useful anyway and if he ever had an adventure in a comic book again he may do just that. It was an interesting concept.

Well, it was basically stated that there’s at least one store in Canterlot which specializes in selling comics of that nature. I wonder if the actual MLP comic will ever go there?
