When Fluttershy was still attending Flight School, she lied about how easy her time at school was and how she did awesome things there to Zephyr. Never telling him about how she failed at flying or was completly afraid of things.

Fluttershy didn't want her brother to know she was a failure and she wanted her little brother to have a sister he could be proud of.

And while Zephyr idolized her "cool" older sister and Rainbow Dash, two of the coolest ponies he had ever known, he never thought that they had the same fear and struggles he had to go through too. And so he figured he could never succeed like they had.

Zephyr: "Fluttershy and that sexy Dash are way too cool to fail at anything! They're 40 percent cooler that anypony I've ever met!"
