The Default filter

TL;DR try this filter and discuss whether we should change the Default filter to this one (or why not), suggest tags to add/remove, etc. so that first-time visitors have some actual art to see.
 
The long version:  
For some reason, whenever I check the logged-out frontpage, there are about 6 exploitable memes, 3 drama pics, 3 other things absolutely nobody cares about/barely/not pony related, and if you’re lucky the remaining three pictures are generally liked art instead of some diaper fetish. In addition, of the activity page’s Top Commented pictures, there’s always at least 1 drama.
 
In short, not a very good first impression if you ask me, and since the frontpage is only 15 pics, the art is pushed off it very quickly. I remember the drama that ensued when we hid sensible things like exploitable meme in the Default filter, so we’re going to to it differently this time.
 
I’ve made a filter based off the No meta filter, with the difference that it hides the NSFW content, as well as some extra generally-drama-causing tags. It’s called No meta-SFW and can be found here
 
Everyone’s welcome to try it and give feedback, but remember: only ~2500 users actually have the current Default filter set as their current filter, so I’m most interested in what they (and the Background Ponies) have to say about it. If your only contribution to this thread is going to be “but the default filter should be All Images!!!1!” leave now.

If it’s going to be the default filter, then I think it should hide foalcon, not just spoiler it; there’s a lot of borderline R34 in there even after removing explicit, questionable and suggestive.
 
I’d even consider hiding grimdark. The default filter should be as clean and family-friendly as possible.

Meh. Every new user switches it to All Images anyway.

This isn’t about what new users switch to. This is about what unregistered and first-time visitors get to see. If they switch to something else afterwards, hey, that’s their choice. But the first impression is everything.

I think most first-time visitors already have an idea of what we’re about, whether it’s what people say about us in whatever circlejerk they’re from, or when they google some strange pony-related thing and find our tag as the first result. I think people who think “Hey this is show is nice. I’m gonna look for fanart of it.” and then finding us is rare. Googling my little pony fanart, we’re not even on the front page.
 
Also, actually switching to the Default filter for once, I think removing spoilered tags and keep everything hidden is a good idea. Seeing spoilered pics is too tempting. People will figure it out that tags are hidden when they can’t find the porn, but at least switching to All Image won’t be the very first thing new users would do.
 
(Actually, I think it’d be best if you had to register before being allowed to switch out of the default, but I know we won’t do that.)

Notice some changes in names. I kinda didn’t want to hide things like questionable, foalcon, grimdark etc by default because there’s some pretty good artwork in there. I’m not against hiding them completely, but I’m not going to decide on that.

Wait, is there not going to be any way to hide the exploitable memes anymore? Life has been so much more pleasant since the No Meta filter got introduced.

Default B will be the same as No Meta, and Default will be No Meta but hiding Explicit and Grotesque.

With switching filter a few clicks away that everyone has access to, I don’t see why not. Just need some mentioning about the hidden stuff in the welcome message (nvm if it’s already done, since I can’t view the welcome message).

Sounds excellent. Personally I’d favor hiding Questionable as well, for the target audience, but that’s a much harder sell.

EDIT: also renamed All Images to Everything so that Default is at the top of the dropdown when logged in.
 
Since now is about the quiet time of the day, I went ahead and changed them (you might need to switch to another filter and then back again for them to work). I’m guessing especially things like screencap will slip through from time to time, but I have to say a frontpage without TV memes etc looks… wow. Quite nice if you ask me.
 
Also, slightly related, we’re working on a page that should allow regular users to see changes made on a specific tag. In other words, if someone is continually removing exploitable meme and meme from expand dong images so that they bypass the filters, well, byebye then.
 
It also goes for other things, like juxtaposition wins. Don’t know the exact meme name? At least tag meme on upload, otherwise you’re just lazy. Though not knowing (or forgetting to add) a certain tag is still on a different scale than intentionally removing implied tags.

I think this new default filter is worthwhile. Casual viewers and newcomers might not understand them as well, and shouldn’t be driven off by, say, nothing but repeated “screaming armor” greeting them on the front page. Those more into the culture might not want to miss out, but I’m sure they’ll be willing to spend the fairly small amount of effort of going to the filter page and switching to one that does display meta things.

Tracking overall changes to tags sounds like a great idea to me. Problem taggers are problematic, after all, and that would make them easier to spot and clean up after.

I think you should sticky this thread so anyone who is a returning background pony from the last two weeks will find out why they couldn’t see certain pics that they were used to seeing like meta pics for example. Darn it now I have to join, because this filter is a good idea for people outside of this fandom. :/

This filter makes “1000 hours in ms paint” “ms paint” into something like stigma.
 
Even looked at “ ms paint “ tag? 75% of this is legit art, yet hided nevertheless. Absence of anti-aliasing -> mspaint tag -> insta hide. Radical, isn’t it?

I don’t remember putting ms paint on the list, actually, meaning it was probably in what was called No Meta a while back (which TSP made). There’s also an idea going around about making score filtering apply to, well, filters instead of a user setting, which might be nice because whoa I’m not sure if some of them would qualify for 1000 hours.
 
I think TSP is also in this thread, but yeah, we might need to take that tag out.

The MS Paint tag was originally used almost only on lazy edits or “really bad art”. I’m not sure at what point people started using it on “actual art” as a way to describe the tool, or why people don’t tag “Paint tool SAI”, “Photoshop” and other tools along with it.
