How would one compromise on this issue, exactly? In my opinion, censorship of anything is a bad thing.
This is a good question.
How is compromise possible when what we wanted all along is less censorship, so we don’t have to feel like we can’t even post what we want to post?
It’s trying to see past yourself and understand the opposing sentiment. It’s shedding selfishness. What’s giving up the Nazi swastika if it means there’s a chance to return to cohesive function all around?
Now, I get it, I keep saying I get it, the concern is the opposition moving onto the next thing. However, if you extended the olive branch and said, “Okay, let’s try this, here’s the deal.” then you have the undeniable high ground if the other side continues to sour afterward.
Then if a fight is still necessary, more people are inclined to stand with the side that showed more self restraint.
Or maybe I’m wrong too, but hell, we’re human.
I can see how that would work. Give up something small to prevent bigger things from disappearing. Lose the battle to win the war, I suppose?
One problem I see is that the opposition, basically with some of their people using dirty tactics, would still overwhelm us next time even if we gave them a little bit of leeway.
