Therainbowgorilla

artist:katey hanes <=> artist:therainbowgorilla

Just to be clear, this means that the two will be interchangeable right? I use both names as one is my online penname/artist name, but the second is the name of my tumblr/derpibooru. So I want someone to be able to search for one or the other and end up with the same results either way, since I want to be able to be found using either name.

The short answer: it doesn’t matter which one you type. See below for a long version.

okay, in this example let’s assume we alias artist:a -> artist:b
It will do a number of things throughout the site, namely:
  • On image pages and thumbnails mouseovers, only artist:b will be shown
  • The /tags/ page for artist:a will redirect to the /tags/ page for artist:b
  • The /tags/ page for artist:b will show that artist:a is an alias for it
  • If you search for artist:b it will show pictures tagged artist:b
  • If you search for artist:a it will show pictures tagged artist:a
  • If you tag a picture with artist:a and click “Save Tags and Source”, the system will change it to artist:b

    So essentially, we (as in, on derpibooru) regard artist:b as the ‘official’ artist tag, and artist:a as just a different name for the same thing.

    For a perhaps more practical example try the existing alias ts -> twilight sparkle. Try searching for ts and pay attention to the mouseover taglists, or even go to >>0, add a ts tag, then click save and see what happens (as long as you remove it afterwards, it’s kinda the generally-agreed-upon test pic)

    @everyone else in this thread, would it be useful if I put a practical example like this in the first post?

ticklish, tickle -> tickling

Should be merged; it’s the same thing.

I’ll tell you what motivates the BPs that keep inflating this one tag with several identical tags (the same person usually adds half a dozen, like this: tickle, tickler, ticklish etc.)
On sites like DeviantArt, people find pics through searching for keywords. DA does not know how to do aliases, so it searches separately for every form of the same word. Therefore, adding all variants to the tags of a pic you upload is good policy; it will get you more hits. But it can lead to a sort of paranoia that people will not find your pic if you do not add every variant.
Moreover, fetishists for example, especially if the fetish is minor or unpopular, browse the site regularly for the object of their affection hoping for undiscovered treasures. Which in turn encourages the few full time artists for that fetish to ‘advertise’ themselves with overtagging even more.

Obviously it is completely meaningless to do the same on a site like Derpibooru. It’s a habit. A bad habit. What we can do to avoid this is to just alias these tags.
