Hello all!

Over the past few weeks, we've been working on writing an updated version of the site's rules. This is mostly being done to express a few concerns that have been brought up, such as some rules being confusing or not entirely clear as to what is/isn't allowed.

This rewrite is meant to make the rules significantly easier to understand, more organized, and clearer than the current wording. Additionally, it adds/clarifies a few things that have always been against the site's rules, but not clearly stated previously.

It is extremely important to note that this is not changing the site's overall policy, or what is enforced. Instead, the purpose of this re-write is to improve overall transparency and clarify what actually is currently being enforced.

This thread is the official public discussion. There was a previous thread about this, but we have made several changes to the proposed rules since then, and figured starting a new thread will allow everyone to see what is currently proposed.

The proposed rules are written below. If you have any questions, concerns, comments, or suggestions, please just post a reply letting us know.

#0 Be excellent to each other
This is the most important rule. Derpibooru is centered around MLP:FiM, which promotes friendship, caring, kindness, and understanding, and we reflect those values in our community to create an accepting and enjoyable environment for everyone.

→ Attempts to antagonize others will not be tolerated.

→ Do not troll, attack, insult, name-call, or otherwise try to intentionally antagonize another person or group of people. This includes making racial, sexual, homophobic, or otherwise demeaning slurs, or posting similarly abusive content.

→ Criticism is welcome and encouraged when done so in a constructive and helpful manner. However, using baseless, unconstructive criticism as a veil for the purpose of insulting or attacking an image and/or an artist is not allowed.

→ This rule applies to all images, comments, forum posts, and private messages, along with all other interactions you may make on this website.

——————————————-

#1 Respect artists and their artwork
Derpibooru is a website dedicated to fanart of MLP:FiM. Without the thousands of artists creating such fan art, we would not have much of a site at all. Therefore, it is important to always respect the wishes of the artists regarding their artwork.

→ Do not upload images that have been altered in a way that the artist may not appreciate. This may include (but is not limited to) removing an artist's signature and/or watermark, recoloring an image to insert or remove an OC, and fetish edits.

→ Do not upload artwork that has not been publicly released, or is intended to remain private or restricted access, without permission from the artist who made it. This includes paid content, such as Patreon-only images or images from an art pack or folio.

→ Images that have been released on a pay-what-you-want scheme, as well as images from a "free version" of a paid art pack, must be released for at least one week (seven days) before they may be posted on this site. Then, only content which can be obtained for free may be posted.

→ Do not upload images from artists who are on our Do-Not-Post (DNP) List, or who have otherwise publicly made a clear and visible statement that they do not wish for their content to be on this website.

→ Do not upload images that contain watermarks or advertisements for sites that promote content theft, sharing of paid-only images, or sharing of images without providing reasonable attribution to the artists who made them. Likewise, do not share links to such sites either.

→ All edits of an original image not made by the original artist should be tagged as "edit", and preferably should be made with the artist's permission.

——————————————-

#2 Properly tag and source images
Without doubt, Derpibooru's most defining feature is our tagging system, which is what organizes the over one million images that have been posted to this website, allowing anyone to find exactly what they are looking for quickly and easily, while filtering out anything they may not want to see. Anyone can edit an image's tags to help organize it better, but it is important to keep tags consistent and accurate.

→ All images must have at least one rating tag, as defined in our tag guidelines. Images tagged as "safe" may not have any other rating tags.

→ The artist(s) of an image should always be tagged in the format of "artist:name" to identify who created the image. If the artist's name is not known, an image should be tagged with the "artist needed" tag.

→ Tags should properly describe an image, including characters, themes, scenes, and events.

→ Tags should only define the tangible "facts" of an image. Tags should not be used to state your opinion of an image — that's what comments are for.

→ Images should have a source URL to an original location where the image was originally posted. If an image is artwork that is intended by the artist to only be posted to Derpibooru, then please use the "Derpibooru Exclusive" tag to identify it as such.

→ For images where the theme of an image may not be 100% clear, or may be subject to debate (for example, friendships vs shipping), the artist's opinion takes precedence.

→ Tags should be useful to the site overall. Do not create tags for the purpose of your own personal organization, or tags that could have an inconsistent or otherwise vague definition.

→ Tag and source vandalism is prohibited. This includes bulk adding/removing/modifying tags on a large quantity of images without permission, adding tags to images in which they do not pertain to, and modifying source URLs to point towards invalid, inaccurate, or useless addresses.

→ Images that have rapidly flashing animation must be tagged with "seizure warning".

→ If an image is not adequately tagged or sourced, please correct them as necessary. Comments complaining about inadequate tagging or sourcing will be considered spam. If you feel that an uploader is posting numerous images without proper tagging or sourcing, submit a report.

——————————————-

#3 Do not upload unrelated content
This site is intended for images regarding MLP:FiM and its surrounding community. Images that are completely unrelated to MLP:FiM may be removed.

→ Images should always have a clear association to MLP:FiM.

→ Images that are not directly related to, but share a strong relation with MLP:FIM and/or it's community (such as previous MLP generations and community-related content), are welcome as well.

→ Images that contain an "obligatory pony" (as in inserting a pony or the mention of a pony into an otherwise unrelated image) does not make that image MLP:FiM-related, and such images will be removed from the site.

→ Images that were created using an exploitable meme or a "fill in the blank" template, which is designed to be an image featuring an already drawn pony where you "drop-in" an unrelated image, are not allowed.

——————————————-

#4 Use filters to hide content you don't wish to see
Derpibooru is extremely permissive as to what we allow on this website, which means we allow images that contain themes which some may find objectionable. To help you avoid seeing images you may not wish to see, we have a tag filtering system, which allows for hiding of images that contain specific tags.

→ If you see images that contain themes you do not like, you should add the appropriate tags to your filter. Do not post comments complaining about the theme of the image.

→ If you find content that you believe violates the site rules, use the report feature to alert a moderator so that it can be investigated. Do not make posts calling out other members for violating rules.

——————————————-

#5 Do not post forbidden content
Derpibooru is governed by the laws of the United Kingdom, Germany, and France, and therefore content against the laws of these countries is forbidden on this site. Likewise, we do not host "borderline" content that may be legally dubious, and generally use a "better safe than sorry" approach to such content. Note that sexualized refers to any image rated "suggestive", "questionable", or "explicit".

→ Do not upload photographs of real life humans in a sexualized depiction, or in sexualized scenarios, whose age cannot be verified to be at least eighteen years of age or older.

→ Do not upload drawn or computer generated images of characters in a sexualized manner, or in sexualized scenarios, who appear to be under the age of eighteen and who are human or closely resembling a human.

→ Simply adding one or two nonhuman features to an otherwise human-like character is not necessarily enough to make the image acceptable. Characters should be nonhuman enough that a layman would not reasonably believe them to be human.

——————————————-

#6 Do not spam, abuse multiple accounts, or abuse site functionality
Compared to other websites of our size, Derpibooru has a fairly accepting policy in terms of allowing multiple accounts, guest and anonymous posting, and usage of site features. However, this leaves open the possibility of abuse, so certain things are not permitted.

→ You are permitted to have multiple accounts for purposes of roleplaying, maintaining different sets of filters, or for personal privacy.

→ You may not use multiple accounts or anonymous posting for the purposes of evading bans, voting on images multiple times, sockpuppeting, or otherwise appearing to be multiple people within the same conversation.

→ Do not spam or post unrelated content in comments and forum threads.

→ Roleplaying should be confined to private messages and the site's roleplaying forum. Do not roleplay in image comments.

→ Do not indiscriminately downvote images based on their tags and/or content. Instead, filter content you do not wish to see.

——————————————-

#7 Comments and posts should respect ratings
While adult content (including sexual and violent themes) is allowed on Derpibooru, not everyone using this website wishes to see it. Therefore, such content should only be posted where uninterested parties would be able to easily avoid it.

→ Forum threads that are intended to contain sexual or violent comment should be marked by including [NSFW] in the thread's title.

→ Comments and posts may go above their image/thread's rating or include rapidly-flashing images only if such portions are relevant to the image or thread and surrounded with

tags.

→ Comments and posts must not be, in their entirety, above the image/thread's rating.

→ Comments and posts with rapidly flashing images or portions multiple steps above the rating must put clear warnings (e.g. 'seizure warning', 'warning: explicit') before them.

→ Profanity and foul language alone is not necessary considered above an image's rating. Swearing is allowed as long as it is not insulting, antagonizing, or excessive.

→ Avatars should uphold to a "safe" rating and not contain any visible nudity, sexually suggestive, explicit, or violent content. Additionally, avatars may not have any rapidly flashing animations that may trigger a seizure.

——————————————-

#8 Respect privacy
As noted above, this site allows a wide variety of content, and some people may not necessarily wish for their names to be publicly associated with such content. Derpibooru takes privacy extremely seriously, and attempting to breach one's privacy is strictly prohibited.

→ If you are aware of an artist or member using multiple names/aliases to keep content separate (such as clean vs sexual content), or using an alternative name as to not be identified, do not call them out or publicly highlight such a fact.

→ Do not publicly post private content or information, such as private messages, off site conversations, and other things that one may not want publicly known, without permission.

——————————————-
#n Rules are not exhaustive
There may always arise situations that were not accounted for in the above rules, or that may be unique or extraordinary in their circumstances. All enforcement of the rules, as well as the decision as to whether something is or is not acceptable, is ultimately left up to the discretion of the site's staff.

I just want to say (again?) that I think the best part of these new rules is that "use filters" is an actual written rule now.

On another note, were a bunch of posts in the old thread deleted for some reason? There are specific posts I remember existing before that aren't there now.

No deleted posts in the previous thread. Usually they would show up with the red "this post had been deleted because" text anyway.

There were other threads discussing site rules, not just these two. So maybe you're thinking of a different thread. But this is the final, "whatever is happening will happen after this" thread.

While I see that the changes are proposed for a good reason and are written by people with extensive experience in moderating this community, I wanted to bring up a concern expressed by another person before, a concern I deeply share: the rules should start on a more positive note.

Reminding people that "MLP:FiM is about sharing, friendship, and understanding" is not a waste of space; on the contrary, it sets the overall mood and, in a way, justifies the rules it precedes.

The only rule I'd add is that the source URL should not point directly to a PNG/JPEG/GIF/etc. file, but to the page where the image is on. Exceptions could be allowed when there are no other choices (like, if the image was posted on imgur or similar).

If the image is on DeviantArt, then the source should point to the actual image page, not the artist's DA home page (like "artistname.deviantart.com").

I can agree with that. But I think the idea behind removing that bit (I forget who suggested that be trimmed down) was so that everything was straight and to the point.

We always look at that when considering takedowns.

Not a loophole, that's intentional. Comments that are mostly within the image's rating, but has a little bit of above-rating content is fine, so long as it's properly spoilered. The rule is mostly to prevent people from writing clopfics or just completely sexual comments on safe rated images.

>>now: → Comments and posts may go above their image/thread’s rating or include rapidly-flashing images only if such portions are relevant to the image or thread and surrounded with tags.

Spoiler tags. I could've sworn I added in the code to not actually parse them… Guess not… Fixed.

Pretty much. Like noted in the OP, the overall spirit of the rules/policies are exactly the same. It's just worded very differently:

- There's now ten rules instead of twelve
- Several rules have been merged/split/rearranged
- A few rules have been further clarified/expanded upon
- A lot of extra/unnecessary wording has been removed.

As for new stuff, really the only things in there that aren't in the current rules are:
1) Don't roleplay in image comments
2) Don't publicly out people who are wishing to remain anonymous/use an alternative name
3) Don't complain about how much you dislike a certain theme when you could just as easily filter it

But to be clear, those are all rules now. They're just not very clearly stated, or kinda just implied by other rules. They've just been explicitly added now so that there's no confusion.

"→ Tags should only define the tangible "facts" of an image. Tags should not be used to state your opinion of an image – that’s what comments are for."
This one seems a bit messy to deal with, considering a lot of the tags the community uses are subjective by nature. One recent extremely upvoted image, >>1177445, uses the vulgar tag "Majestic as fuck", which… not only is a vulgar tag on a safe image, but is also a rather memetastic way of saying "undignified". Another good example would be three commonly seen together, those being "What has science done?", "wat", and "why". Or things like "<artist> is trying to murder us" for artists who regularly upload extremely cute images. Bit of a hard choice really — do you enforce the rules to the letter, at the risk of spoiling the fun and angering the community, in order to create a neatly organized and professional website? Or do you let certain things slide if they don't seem to be doing any real harm?

It wouldn't be enforced heavily to the point where all the fun tags would go away. But it's pretty common for people to try tagging an image with ten different tags that all mean "cute" or "sexy" or whatever, or a single person trying to invent/force an opinionated tag.

So "<artist> is trying to murder us" would not likely go away. But if one person is spamming something like "<Tagger> approves", or if 90% of an images tags are just opinionated, than that's when it becomes an issue.

Likewise, we've recently had a problem where someone in particular kept trying to pass their headcanon off as a spoiler for future episodes (which have not been announced yet) via the spoiler tags. That's, needless to say, quite a bit of a problem.

Aren't these two contradicting?

Proposed new rule:
If an image is artwork that is intended by the artist to only be posted to Derpibooru, then please use the "Derpibooru Exclusive" tag to identify it as such.

Existing tag description:
Any piece of artwork that was posted directly to Derpibooru, and as such has no "source".

The new rule makes "derpibooru exclusive" sound like anything tagged with it is not permitted to be uploaded anywhere else.

The tag description probably needs to be a bit better worded. The "Derpibooru Exclusive" tag means that the artist of that image uploaded it only on Derpibooru, so that this site is the only official "source" of the image.

If someone else posts it on Tumblr, or if Equestria Daily features it in a drawfriend, or if someone uses it on a post in /mlp/, or whatever else, it still counts as "Derpibooru Exclusive" simply because there aren't any other sources of that image from the original artist.
