Policy update regarding AI content

Finally the Derpibooru site has some common sense. Good news!

I always felt that the website was going through different paths that I don’t agree with since 2016, but here they have all the reasons to decline any AI generated images. It took a long time though. It felt like yesterday when some people defended it, including closing a thread I’ve made where I discussed the AI issue for reasons that didn’t apply later in other threads or comments. They reminded me of the people who defended the interpolated videos of animation that had more frames than the typical needed 24 frames, which is also content made by an AI (Noodle made a great video talking about it).

You’d expect people using AI to solve or assist mathemathical issues like coding, ecuations to make things faster or more efficient, not using it to corrupt a discipline that requires human creativity and imagination and then justify your six or seven fingers to “hey, it will get better with time, don’t be that harsh to my dear computer”.

This type of rewarded mediocrity alineates people, and it’s not the first time that happened in this website and this fandom. I’m glad that Derpibooru made the right call here.

@Ring Team I am glad that there is a proper seperate booru for it, at least. Best of both worlds.

AI is used for such things. For example, protein folding, predicting climate change, diagnosing neurodegenerative disorders or discovering new crystals. But Derpibooru is an imageboard, not a scientific journal, so obviously you see image generation, not scientific research.

What I’d like to see AI used for on Derpibooru some day, is a tag recommender. It could see an image and say “these tags probably apply: safe, derpy hooves, pony, pegasus, solo, mare, sitting, spread wings, ear fluff, derp, smiling at you”. And then a human would either confirm, applying the tags, or deny.

For the love that all that is holy, please keep discussion limited to this site’s policies.

If you want to discuss the impact of AI on the evolution of human culture or whatever, I’m sure r/philosophy or what have you will be glad to hear it.

To be sure, and I agree with you. Your post was just a convenient place to remind people that there are two seperate issues under discussion. And, of course, that from the admins’ point of view “does AI belong on Derpi” is the only relevant one, altho the value of AI as a whole is a very interesting question.

This is literally just the staff going “Yes this is good” according to their subjective wants. I looked at your guide and it’s all over the place. You need someone who is actually GOOD at art to make those criteria, but guess what - those would also be subjective. I don’t see why you need ai-generated or assisted or whatever images on the booru. None of it is art anyway, because it’s not made by a dead European from before the 20th century. If there’s a booru for AI images already just keep it ALL there and disallow all ai-related works from here. ezpz.

The problem I have is that I’m sort of half Ai, half traditional art. Ai assisted exists but I have a feeling that changing my images to that now would just get me banned. What’s weird is I’ve used AI less and less over time (seriously how would you get this out of and image generator), and would probably qualify for the Ai Assisted tag. I haven’t used the tag much since when I did I got hate messages from ‘real artists’

I don’t really want to go to Tantabus.ai because the altboorus are alway dead. Which makes sense really, since the point of derpibooru is to have an archive of all pony content all in one place for people to access.
Each Image takes me a few hours to produce properly, and I don’t think it’d be worth posting over there just for 10 people to see it (plus the people who would go there wouldnt have a great eye for quality work, sorry guys, no offence)

To be clear, I hate low effort AI trash probably more than the average artist. And they should be removed from visibility. I am surprised that it was taking up so much of the moderators time with the two post a day policy. That’s got to be a lot of spoof accounts.
Anyway, I’ll see if tagging as Ai assisted is acceptable. I’ve got some nice comics in the works that I think people will want to see.

I think you should look at examples of what is “allowed” and what is “not allowed.”
Then view your posts and edits the tags.

Derpibooru is not archive first, it’s community first and you can find a ton of art was removed at the request of people in the community under the DNP list. Removal of ai slop is a pro-community move, if you want pro-archive then use an alt booru.

They already said img2img assisted art is more likely to be accepted if that’s your workflow so you will probably not get mass deleted. But talking about exposure when ai buries art under slop is not much of an argument for where to post.

Tantabus is different from the other alt boorus because every alt booru was a copy of this one, where tantabus can try to build up their own users who enjoy or consume machine made images.

I’m honestly not happy with all of this. Having to go to yet another site just to find things I find hot instead of having it all in one place is a pain in the ass. It was already annoying when artists split from derpi a while back and I had to go to Ponybooru to find people who were no longer posting here that I liked. Now this new site and I had to make another account, couldn’t even use my DB login info

There could have, and should have, been a better way of handling this.

I’m not talking about the AI approach in scientific disciplines. I’m talking about the AI approach in artistic disciplines.

Using AI to find solutions to health issues is fine. But we’re talking about art. Art is fueled by motivation and human creativity. That motivation comes from human experiences.

If people use AI, which lacks motivation, creativity and human real life experiences, to generate art and fill any image hosting website with waifus with seven fingers in one hand, no nose and weird use of lighting, composition and perspective issues, you invalidate these human features.

If you corrode these things about art, you corrode art. I don’t see a situation where this benefits anyone, but people do defend it regardless, which would be very in tune with the MLP fandom, and it could explain a lot of things about them.

Barring the “dead Eurpoeans” bit, I’m basically here. Staff is going to be counting AI artifacts on the head of a pin trying to make calls when they should just relegate it all to Tantabus and show some respect to the artists who made this site viable to begin with.

And yeah, pure neural network generation with no creativity in it can hardly be called art. Art is when you imagine a result and then try to achieve it, not when you roll the dice and accidentally get something pretty. This is why ai composition/ai assisted are allowed on Derpibooru - they require the artist to imagine a picture (or animation, etc.) and then make it real.

I never posted any AI art on here but I think this is a mistake. At least make a separate website or something. AI is only going to get bigger. Trying to sweep it under the rug won’t work.
