I can only welcome this decision. It might be good not just for Derpibooru but for art community at all, including AI creators. Too many people, as seems to me, use AI not as a tool (despite constantly calling it a tool) but as a magical thing what does all the work for them. If at least here on Derpi new AI policy will limit people from simply slapping the “do magic” button, maybe they will have more motivation to develop new skills in image processing and learn to control their creation process better, make a more presice implementations of their fantasies on digital canvas, trully express themselves rather than just making a likable high detailed images.
But I also want to stand as a devil advocate for a while. Here is why.
Learning to draw is hard, many people never dare to even try it, and AI become a salvation for such people. Even if their creative control over AI is low, they are still got an ability to materialize something from their imagination. Everyone who does art knows how wonderfull this feels, and also knows that pain when you are trying over and over to draw something but get nothing but disgust from an ugly doodles your low skill can produce at moment. Not every person could go through it. AI can give to beginner artist a less painfull start, allowing them to have satisfying results almost immediately, not after months or even years of training. Of course I’m talking about using AI as a tool, a source of props, resources for photobashing, references etc. Obviously AI might do completely opposite and stop people from developing any image processing skills, because why learn to draw if you can get your favorite pony’s butt on a screen right now. It’s a real devil’s toy.
So this is my point: AI can make drawing easier for non-artists, but only if they don’t have to polish their AI-generated images to perfection. Fixing all the crap AI can drop might be as exhausting as drawing all from scratch. I read the new requirements on quality of AI-uploads, and I think real old-school artists frequently doesn’t avoid mistakes like wrong perspective, objects incorrectly aligned with perspective, missing character features and so. The rules says for example what four instead of three freckles is acceptable, but I myself did draw Applejack without freckles at all :) Many images under
missing wings are human-made, not an AI slop. So maybe mods can have some more mercy for flaws in
ai composition
images and forgive the ones what is too tedious to fix? Fixing distorted perspective might be a huge pain in the ass for example.
Obviously it should not apply to cases when people try to load images straight from AI generator. And it is only a suggestion.
