Goodbye, IRC

It has been a wild journey, many memories were created in our IRC, many friendships forged, much drama survived. It has, however, become very outdated by modern standards, and being entirely honest, even our site staff stopped using IRC for moderation many months ago, with our preferred backup communications channel being a Telegram group for staff.

It feels surreal to me to make this announcement, as for as long as I’ve been a Derpibooru user, IRC has been such an integral part of our way of being a community. And I know some of you, perhaps many of you, will feel like this is a huge loss, a huge L for the site as a whole. But we simply cannot keep going with a communications method almost none of our staff actually check on any sort of reliable basis.

Please make sure you have backups of your IRC chat history from our channels, as these channels may get deleted from the network entirely in the future.

In the meantime, check out our Discord server if you haven’t already, there are wolves, but those don’t bite… unless asked nicely. They’re actually quite friendly and love treats and cute collars.

We used to maintain a few IRC channels on the Canternet network. IRC is what people used for real-time chat before skype and discord, but hated ICQ or AOL.

Glad we’ve still got the forums for support.

MFW IRC was already largely irrelevant by the time I started using it

No, it was a separate off-site chat room which was used by a few people to just hang around and chat, and occasionally ask for site support.

I have never used or even seen the IRC chats so…meh.

If you and other people who like it (including me!) had been using the IRC channel in the first place, maybe it would be more active and not deprecated :) Email is still an option.

Honestly, in my own personal opinion, the Discord server is a bit more reliable and faster than the IRC.

I only remember Derpi’s IRC from ‘Perfectly normal pony’ badges

As for irc itself, I’ve only used it once in my life in 2012 or 11

I voted yes, it’s sad in principle. As an old fossil, I’ve used IRC into the previous decade to stay in touch with some of my online buds and communities.
But in practice, not the Derpi one. Not even once.
So for me it’s sad the same way that FM radio not being accessible on smartphones is sad. Another technological aspect of my formative years being relegated to the world of pay phones and Rolodexes.

Post should prob have contained some info as to what IRC even is, I had never heard about IRC before now XD
