Feature suggestions and discussion [READ THE FIRST POST]

It would be good to see a feature like automatic upvote when downloading image. It would be grater if it would work both ways: when you click “download” or download with RMB menu (“Safe image as…”). No need to create new button like “VS” and “DLS”, checkbox in settings wold be comfortable.
I don’t know is it possible to make it by site engine. If it isn’t, maybe, you can create a script and
place it somewhere. So, user could copy it in his Greasemonkey an use it.
Sorry for bad English.

Here a copy, if someone can translate it better then me.

I think it would be possible to have the download buttons be able to double as upvote buttons (although I imagine this probably won’t happen, at least not on the main site), but I think it would probably be impossible to detect someone clicking “Save image as…” serverside.

That’s why I wrote about script on user’s side. I think could be possible, but I don’t sure too. This is not the most important thing. Feature with Download button only is fine too.

automatic upvote when downloading image

Seems kind of unnecessary. Some people are probably downloading images so they can make hateful edits or upload them to other sites and talk trash about them, and there are definitely people who download porn but don’t want to be on record as upvoting it.

Also, no-login BPs can’t vote on images, so it would trigger a login screen every time they tried to download something.

in my case, I download them to sanitize duplicates, meaning I compare images by zooming in up to 20x for jpeg artifacts and other things.. not really a useful feature for me and whoever else is comparing images like this.

in all, it’s not a necessary nor useful feature, the way I see it, since pressing the favorite or like buttons shouldn’t be too difficult in the first place.

Why should the download be an automatic upvote? I think people can manage to click that button themself. Even if that would mean that anons who aren’t registered users could use it to upvote, it also would mean possibly misuse for this function.

Frankly, I’m not on board with this. There are plenty of images of the non-safe variety that I’ve downloaded but did not upvote. Just because I could fap to it, doesn’t mean I think it’s good enough for an upvote.

@TexasUberAlles
Pfft, like I care about my “record”. I’m nothing if not honest with my voting. Including removing the upvote on some favorites, and even downvoting a few.

I’m asking for it because it’s the best way to match downloaded pictures and avoid duplications, because filename changes when new tags are add.

I thought, that upvotes are privet and only fves are public, aren’t them?

Also, no-login BPs can’t vote on images, so it would trigger a login screen every time they tried to download something.
I wonder, the main question is “Is it possible to make it so that each user can choose enable/disable for himself?” If it could be switchable feature, like I wrote earlier, it solves the main problem. So, it could only for logined persons, if it’s so important.

I think people can manage to click that button themself.
I forget to upvote sometimes, for example. Although, when I want to save a lot of pictures it coses to big number of extra actions, witch may be made automatically.

Can we get a link to the search syntax page from the tags page, maybe beneath the Tag Tools header?

A lot of users, myself included, think of tags whenever they search for anything and have little idea that clicking the [?] button next to the search box will teach them about some powerful tools. Many of us just assume tags are the only means to search images, so we go to that page first then stop looking for more information like the lazy featherbrains we sometimes are.

In my case, I looked on the Tags page then, finding nothing, I went to the forums for an answer and found the “No more wall of faves… etc.” thread. When that became hard to find, I did a google search to find what I wanted. That [?] button is just so easy to miss when thinking, “How does that ‘special tag’ go, again?”

I doubt I’ll make the mistake again, but it would be an easy fix for other users who mix up tags with search syntax.
Background Pony #15CC
One another suggestion. What if to make words “*bold*”, “_italic_”, etc. in “Syntax quick reference” buttons? Don’t replace them with buttons, but make words clickable. After click design element will apply to selected part of already written text. I think it would be quite convenient, especially for spoiler.

Still think it would be nice to be able to manually set the grid layout for thumbnails; five across is fine for my widescreen laptop, but even three across makes the thumbnails too tiny on my phone.

So, we have that fancy Statistics page with a lot of cool stuff, but one thing I’m missing is the total size (in MB,GB…) of all images uploaded to DB, or maybe even the total size of daily uploads. Not sure how hard this would be to make or what would it do to the database….just a suggestion.

It takes a little while to calculate accurately because it’s a really large number of quite small files, so it won’t be on the stats page.

The average size of an image is ~840kB, there’s 1156966 of ‘em, which gives you a number of 974GB. In reality that’s just the base images - we have all the thumbnails to consider, which is about half again. In total we have about 1.4 terabytes of image data, all in all.
Background Pony #15CC
Don’t you think that tag and source changes should be privet? It would be better for the site. I mean, for example, I want to edit tag or source of explicit picture, but I don’t do it because I know that everyone can check my profile and notice that I saw that picture.

But if we do that then it’s much harder for other users to notice when people go around and systematically mess up tags/sources.

If you don’t want people to see your account editing tags/sources, then you can create a second one that isn’t publically linked to your main one and use it to edit these things instead.

@Exedrus
Maybe, hide it only from profiles for common users, but retain viewable for site stuff, and keep viewable changes on a picture page (“Tag changes” button). So, if someone notice a strange tag change, he can view, who did it, and report that user, than some administrator can take action.

But the problem is - a single bad tag change in itself is nothing. People make mistakes, they could’ve gotten two tabs switched and thought they were on another image, they could’ve accidentally clicked the wrong tag in the auto-suggestion, etc. One bad tag change is not malicious at all. But if someone is going around making the same invalid change to a number of images, that’s a lot more noteworthy.

On top of that, this site has a staff of about forty people, all volunteers doing this in our spare time. Only about half of us can see the reports queue. Then of that group of people, some mods are just on hiatus from the site, some don’t normally handle reports (such as mods who spend more time managing tags, programmers who need mod access for testing, etc), etc. Overall there’s about 10-12 people regularly handling reports for a site that has over 25,000 unique visitors daily.

With that variance, we depend on members to report what they see if they believe someone is behaving malicious. If we hid who’s changing tags and said “report every single bad tag change you see, so we can see if it’s the same person or not”, that would completely overwhelm the staff managing the report queue, and nothing would ever get done around here.
