Race and class based differences.
It’s really commendable just how much variation there are between the origins, and not just in the obvious way. Like, playing as a male or female Human Noble has no real difference. But there’s several different scenes and dialogue between playing as a male City Elf or female City Elf. The Dwarven Commoner one is largely the same regardless, but if you play as a female you get some extra dialogue option about engaging in “noble hunting” as another way to move up the caste system.
The mage origin doesn’t change anything if you’re male or female, but it is the only origin where you can choose to be either a human or elf for the same starting, complete with different last names (doubly notable since the human mage is an Amell, so you’re Hawke’s cousin. Elven mage is some nobody though).
