I think they can work well if the game is built around them. The old RE games, I dunno. RE4? Yeah. Metroid Prime? Definitely.

tbf ||You encounter Mr X multiple times and he is final boss for the default ending of the game. Vampire lady only survives the first 2-3 hours of the game before biting the dust (heh). ||

Also I just love how Ethan is the only canonically inmortal character from the entire series who can stand a lot of pain and attacks, despite other previous characters also suffering similar punishment
