You answered your own question. The money they received emboldened them to increase the games scope so They kept adding features, systems and gimmicks onto the game which would inevitably fuck up the game, necessitating more time and money to fix the game.
When kickstarting a game, It's important to choose what the focus should be early on and stick with it so you have a game that does everything it's suppose to do really well.
If you don't, you'll probably get a game that does hundreds of things very poorly.
