I’m not sure what anyone means by “too Japanese”. I mean beyond differences in how nudity is depicted and wordplay jokes, but otherwise, how is anything “too [x where x equals a nationality, religion, or what have you]”?
It just smacks of someone I remember saying that a number of animes were “socialist” somehow because they dealt with things such as teamwork.
 
Be “Too Japanese” they mean western people will not gonna understand the jokes that are usually ilustrated in Japan, the culture, the names and some other things.

Professionally Depressed
On the Yokai as mons things.
 
I argue that they’re just using the concept of Yokai to make interesting new mons. (While there are actual kinds of Yokai in there such as Kappas, Kitsunes, And Tengus, Most of them are pretty original)
 
Also, Yo-kai Watch really plays them in a way that makes the concept of Yokai accessible to nearly anyone.
