From what I can tell, Brazil has risen sharply since the left gained power. With the overall population benefitting from policies that have increased the quality of life, at the expense of mostly the rich. The biggest problems being that crime in the slums is still a danger, and that with the old guard of politicians having gotten corrupt and wasting funds on prestige projects. A new generation will have to build on those successes and mitigate the failures.

Maduro has lacked legitimacy since the day he was sworn in as Chief Replacement to a popular, elected president. And he has wasted so much political clout propping himself up, he has done little to adress the endemic economic problems that predate Chavez and all his predecessors; capital flight and a mono product economy. Instead of scrapping policies that no longer work because of changing factors or even treating the symptons of these underlying problems, he’s only battling protestors and playing up the US as a belligerent, imperial power.

Tieing into Peet’s video, the point of democracy is to replace a ruler or cabinet that has gone corrupt, so kudos on Brazil having the ability to do that without having to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Keep what the left improved, throw out whatever simply didn’t work. And once the next right government grows overconfident, arrogant or crooked, replace them. If Peet wants a defense of democracy, there it is. I don’t prefer democracy because it is flawless or it always gets me what I want, but because without it, when the shoe’s on the other foot, you’re stuck with an incompetent, regressive, backwards idiot who will not go away. It’s like Europa Universalis, and landing yourself a monarch with bottommed out skill who lives to the ripe old age of 113.
