All this talk about women reminds me of something I rarely see discussed. With so many women now working instead of raising children we are going to have serious population issues in a decade or two.
The problem is coming in almost all developed countries, China, Russia, Europe, the US and more. Immigration seems like the solution but rarely fixes the problem and is a controversial topic in many countries.
Researchers warn that maintaining a working society and infrastructure may become problematic in the coming years. To avoid this dystopia, what should we do?
Artificial reproduction? Russia is now trying to ban contraceptives in an attempt to increase the birthrates for example, other authoritarian measures may be taken if the problem does not stabilize in states like that. These are not solutions I would want to see where I live but what can we do about this?
Also maybe reward people for having children rather than punish them? Something like a caretaker wage. I mean taking care of children and the house is a very important thing to do so why not pay people for it? That having children is at least financially neutral if not a net gain.
If we’re willing to we can even compromise and make it exclusive to woman as a maternal wage. It would most certainly help encourage woman to be full time wives/mothers which is what conservatives claim they want. Denmark had this policy for a while and it worked fairly well and female participation in the workforce dropped off hard and is still below average today. I think if the democrats pushed this policy it would be a hard one for the republicans to fight, sure it is welfare but it also is encouraging the traditional family which republicans claim to stand for.
I do see problems in that to get it passed there will have to be a compromise which likely means gay people will be excluded, similar to how in the 1930’s to get the new deal passed they excluded blacks.
It’s no surprise people don’t want to have many children in the capitalist system as the financial penalties for doing so are significant. Rewarding people for having children rather than punishing them will help a lot. The more capitalist a country is the lower it’s birthrate tends to be with the most extreme example being South-Korea.
