If you really wanted to fix the problem of rent being expensive, then they should have eased zoning regulations so that more homes and businesses could be built.

You would think with a supermajority California Dems would pull all the stops to make the state a must-go but it seems they’re prioritizing entrenching power and suppressing the progressive flank (a la New York Dems) than anything else (that Newsom is a Ronald Reagan fan with connections to oil cartels doesn’t help).

Yes! A lot of the zoning laws we currently have need to go. Unfortunately, they ain’t going away as long as the banks and their political cronies remain in control.
Tbh banks probably don’t care much about zoning laws. Zoning is predominantly the domain of petit-bourgiousie politics, particularly in America where it’s a pretty middle class feature of mostly the suburbanites. Simplifying the zoning laws or even introducing European style zoning (where specific areas of a municipality can be zoned for single uses, but broadly speaking everything is mixed use so long as certain environmental rules are observed to make sure someone’s light industry isn’t going to stink up the neighborhood or make living in the area super loud and obnoxious at all times of the day) is readily resisted by suburban residents who own their own homes and they’ll fight it because either it will in reality or they are afraid it my reduce their property values and resale values. Which in so far as we’re going to live in a commodities-first society will be a massive factor in how these people vote. School districts are as heady a battle ground for local politics ghouls for the same reason, because so long as the local district they leave in is considered “good”, it helps property values and raises them. Which means once these people lose the kids and they move out and go on their own their parents can cash out and leave to a smaller and more manageable condo in Florida. Or to just move to a cheaper place that’s not much different because the relative difference in home and property values IS their retirement plan.
The later bit can probably be weakened by acknowledging that America has like, absolutely no retirement policy as Social Security has been weakened over time to encourage Americans to put money into entirely private 401k plans and gamble their retirement futures on the health of the market, with some tax provisions to make it “stable” (never mind the first generation trend of 401k retirees being forced to return to the work force because their savings plan collapsed or does not offer checks large enough to sustain them). Reinforcing social security to the point it’s a universal pension that can sustain people at a minimum level would help weaken the emphasis of home values as a retirement plan.
That’s just based on acknowledging basic zoning history. There’s a lot more that can be plugged into it to reduce the factor of housing being a nest egg and to free it up from its nature as a commodity in that way. Since once of course property values become a not-primary concern it’d be easier to build a LaCabousier (I don’t even know if I spelled his name right) styled housing block to add more housing, which before would have been a massive financial bomb to housing values in the area.
Bank financing is mostly concerned as to how a building is built because building anything is super expensive. Deregulating zoning won’t make building so cheap I can do it over night and builders and developers WILL need to take out loans to do anything. Banks are interested first in whether the project will produce sufficient and save returns that you can at least make the minimum payments on the loans you have to take out to build. So in so far as the market exists and you need money to build your thing you will have to have a bank go, “yes but could you add a Dave and Busters” just to make sure that you can pay off the loan in twenty years.
The natural way to fix this is to just return entirely to municipal guided development where cities have a much larger budget for building and development than what they may have now and talking over much, much more to cut out middlemen and be their own vehicle of building apartments and shopping arcades as extruded from the imagination of the local planning department and they rent that out to you. But that’s probably what you and Zak absolutely don’t want. But that’s the truth when it comes to construction financing. You can’t leave the bank if you’re still going to keep the paradigm we are in.

For a lot of kids those school lunches are their only access to balanced nutrition. Parents could be very poor, ignorant or malicious.
Especially in a house where they might eat mostly grains, and the occasional peanut butter or hotdog. Or sometimes nothing but water, and bread.
School cafeteria often let kids rack up some debt and try to bill the parents later, or for free you get a bagged lunch with like a turkey sandwich, fruit and milk, maybe a snack, maybe it’s peanut butter sandwich instead of turkey, especially for vegetarians.
School lunch was usually lit. The kids with money would leave stuff they didn’t eat near the tray washing kitchen.
Edit: I forgot to mention, the left stuff was usually closed milk containers and unopened packages or fruit that hasn’t been bitten into, it wasn’t gross.

So France is on fire right now. PM Macron wanted to pass legislation that would raise the retirement age by 2 years. The French people did not like that. With it being all but guaranteed to be shot down if it came to a vote, Macron then instead bypassed the vote altogether and forced it into law. So now France is seeing widespread protests. Even better? 80% of people opposed this bill, 64% support the protests, and 59% say they are just fine with the nation “coming to a standstill” if it means opposing this bill.
To which I have 2 things to say: Once again, France knows how to treat their politicians and once again Americans prove we are such pussies.
American politicians: “Not sorry, we’re raising the retirement age by 5 years.”
American people: “Sorry, pls don’t do it. Oh you did? Okay, just don’t do it again. Oh you are? Okay, please don’t oh you already are again. Okay we’ll work until we die. Even after that? Oh okay.”
France politicians: “Sorry, we’re raising the retirement age by 2 years.”
French people: “Not sorry, we’re dusting off the guillotines.”

Macron is president actually, not PM (unlike most European parliamentary republics, the French president is more than a mere figurehead, similar in that regard to the POTUS on your side of the pond. As for the PM, they’re usually little more than the president’s mouthpiece, unless the latter happens to lose his parliamentary majority, in which case he’s forced to cohabit with an opposition PM, who becomes the main decision-maker for domestic policy, while the president has to content himself with matters of foreign policy for the remainder of his term — such a scenario happened three times in the history of the Fifth Republic: twice under Mitterrand in 1986 and 1993, and once under Chirac in 1997).
Anyway, Macron’s PM, Elisabeth Borne, used the controversial article 49.3 of the Constitution that allows a government to bypass the parliamentary vote to enforce a bill, at the cost of making her government liable for that move (Macron and Borne feared they wouldn’t have enough votes at the National Assembly — where the governmental coalition is usually forced to rely on its ideological convergence with right-wing party Les Républicains to garner a majority, which wasn’t a sure thing this time around).
Now the Borne government is facing several votes of no-confidence come Monday, one of which is being pushed by a dissident centrist group and has the best chances of transpartisan support (from the left-wing NUPES, the far-right RN and members of LR who are ready to defy the voting instructions of their party’s higher-ups, if only out of fear of becoming themselves the targets of the current popular discontent).
Should it fail or Macron decide to disregard it, it’ll only fan the flames in the streets.
Macron really shouldn’t have banked on the French people having somehow become complacent since the pandemic (which had forced him to provisionally shelve that reform): if there’s something they absolutely hate to see the government mess with, it’s their retirement plans.

I gotta say, it’s a weird rule. Reminds me of the recent habit of US Presidents going wild with executive orders and basically daring Congress and the courts to stop them.
Of course, most of our dodgy EOs don’t result in immediate, fiery, nationwide protests. That’s as good a check on executive power as any.

Federal court blocks the Santis anti woke law
The court rejected his request to overturn a previous ruling that blocked it.
I seriously doubt any of these totalitarian laws his administration is passing are going to be upheld. It’s just posturing to make him more attractive to the GOP. And quite frankly him being pitted against Trump in the Rep primary would probably be the best thing that could happen as it would plunge the party into chaos.
Of course if Trump gets indicted and convicted then Santis has a clear shot.

That article was meant to bypass parliamentary obstruction, which was responsible for the instability and eventual failure of the Fourth Republic.
Since 2008, it can only be used once every legislative session (the current one goes from October 2022 to June 2023), the only exceptions being for budgetary bills (Borne had to use the 49.3 ten times at the end of last year to pass the budget for 2023) and bills pertaining to the funding of social security.
The record for number of uses still belongs to Michel Rocard, who had to 49.3 his way through his legislative minority a whooping 28 times between 1988 and 1991, and was targeted by five unsuccessful votes of no-confidence as a result.

The House GOP Armed Services Committee is upset that the Biden administration is still abiding by the New START Treaty after Putin “suspended” participation in it.
Friendly reminder that despite all the handwaving the GOP’s official position is “send the troops and launch the nukes”, something that Biden has repeatedly ruled out no matter how much the hawks (especially the fascists and Holocaust trivializers running NATO state Poland) want their Holy War.

Regardless…
Texas passed a law in 2015 mandating a state takeover if a school district or one of its campuses receives failing grades from the TEA for five consecutive years.
Has Houston not met this requirement yet?
