Why would I feel embarrassed for sincerely held belief? Billions of people worldwide don’t feel embarrassed for believing some Jewish socialist walked on water and raised himself from the dead 2,000 years ago.

The Capitol Hill raid was fucking funny, and while I definitely don’t agree with what drove them to conduct the raid, I also don’t care about the people they inconvenienced due to how they’re even bigger criminals than the raiders. How many people needlessly died in pointless overseas wars because of QShaman? How many people were denied healthcare because ‘donations’ from the health insurance lobby and big pharma were too good to pass up, is because of the guy who stole Pelosi’s podium?

Everything the left told me about the liberals is true…

So I heard Joe Exotic isn’t getting a pardon. I guess that limo is going to have to wait until 2043 then.

So anyone know how many of the DC rioters were pardoned by Trump?

And hopefully they do it again anyway, since at least then D.C. will have some human character injected into it, since as Chapo Trap House says, that place is fucking alien.

I’m in the middle on this.

On the one hand, I don’t mean to downplay the seriousness of what happened on the 6th. Storming the seat of government isn’t beanbag, and I’m not a free speech absolutist. If QAnons and channers get banned from Twitter, it’s no great loss, and the same journalists I often respect for their lack of hysteria are now descending into a different form of it out of fear of government and corporate overreach. Which could be a problem in the future, but we’re not there yet. At some point or another, you have to hit the mute button to have productive conversations.

That being said, Americans, as a whole, are not culturally inclined to be sympathetic to politicians. Horrifying as the Capitol riot may have been for them, they’re still in power. There was never any chance that the uprising would succeed. The Capitol getting stormed is not worse than a small business getting burned down during a riot, as I’ve seen people claim (I don’t actually believe the BLM protests had many riots anyway, but that’s beside the point).

This why pundits who constantly bemoan the rise of a “post-truth society” irk me. The progressives that I see are not opposed to all unfalsifiable beliefs. They’re willing to tolerate mainstream religions or New Age eccentricities. New Atheists like Richard Dawkins are viewed nowadays as outdated embarrassments scarcely better than the Religious Right. Concerns over strict factuality are not why QAnon believers or other conspiracy theorists are so feared by the center and the left.

@HeadlessHorselessHorseman
The reason Americans are distrusting of polticians because a good many of them didn’t take a civics class, so they do not understand how government and taxes work. That confusion allows for people with ambitions of power to easily manipulate the masses most often The Republicans use this ignorance to get elected and then proceed to make government ineffective.

This happened in 2011 when Republicans riding a wave of lies and racism took the House and the Senate. Mitch McConnell then refused to pass any bill that he did not like causing congress to grind to a halt.

I am not in the middle. What happen during the 6th was wrong on all grounds.

Mitch also began to really abuse his power by not even allowing votes on things to avoid his party looking bad when they went on the record voting down popular legislation, he knew it wouldn’t pass, but didn;t want yo even give it a shot because he knew his party didn’t represent the people,

You wont let some mouthy upstart wealthy banker shit i dunno drive a plane or performing your heart surgery even if that guy ranted about the unfairness of the medical system/airport/whatever

If you think that it’s only republican voters susceptible to populist BS, then you’re a moron. Did the Obama presidency slip your mind? Remember when he had the house, senate, and whitehouse, yet didn’t implement any of his big-ticket items? Trump’s no better, because he did the same in his position as well.
HeadlessHorselessHorseman

@Ebalosus
This is where I think you’re wrong. Politicians do attempt to represent the interests of their constituents on some level (which is part of why the left and center are so upset by the riots; they identify with the victims of it as people in a way others don’t).

Obama was constrained by political reality, and so was Trump. Trump was just too ignorant, and at the end of the day, apathetic, to find ways to push his policies further. But even so, he did a lot for the conservative agenda, and while progressives mock him, they’re very much dismayed by his success in stacking the judiciary.

Tgough I will add those same people who get swept up in the excitement are inevitably let down as the realization hits them that this is a big country and people regularly disagree on things. Change is always coming, but it is slow.

I think it was arguably a order of magnitude worse than the rioting just from the symbolic significance alone. BLM/antifa rioting was still very bad and the democrats are complete hypocrites for all ignoring it and honoring

Trump is gone, but everything that enabled him to be the worst president in American history is still there. The Republicans who permitted a criminal president to act with impunity and who attacked the core of our democracy by trying to disqualify millions of legal votes are still in power. Millions of Republican voters deluded by propaganda are seething with anger and believe despite all evidence that the election was stolen from Trump.

Not since the Civil War has America been so divided and not since the Great Depression has an incoming president faced such an arduous challenge. I will give Joe Biden a chance to prove himself, but my hopes are very low. Biden is the product of a broken establishment. I think the best he can do is restore the same normality that gave rise to Trump.

Obama couldn’t get what he wanted done because he did not have a united party. The democratic party did not agree on a lot of things especially when it came to passing stimulus bills. Things got worst for Obama when one of the Democrats in the Senate died resulting in Democrats being unable to block the Fillbuster which Republicans used at every turn to hinder Obama.

All of this was done so the Republicans could protect the narrative that “Goverment is ineffective” it galvanized their base of supporters who believed that Obama couldn’t pull though with his promise of Change leading to a Red wave which set America on the course of gridlock.
