Well I certainly wouldn’t lament the tattooed Christian Nationalist whose own mom thinks he’s a misogynistic piece of garbage getting the boot. I have my doubts that the whiny zero charisma Florida man is a step up though.

It’s hard to tell whether Trump is joking or not. During the pandemic, Trump told people to stop testing because he thought that the reasons why the Covid cases are rising in the US is because of the tests. So one day, he joked about how he’ll stop people from doing Covid tests. And then he proceeded to revoke the FDA over lab-developed tests.
Trump just doesn’t take his duties seriously. This was also felt by his administration where they just had to make him feel important and he would go along with them. The actual details and implications of the decisions didn’t interest him.

Trump’s administration discussed buying Greenland from Denmark, comparing the idea to “a large real estate deal” and suggesting the island would be of strategic value to the United States
He did that. It wasn’t a joke, and he was not joking. It was real.
A part of the problem with this president is that people have trouble distinguishing between when he is joking and when he is being serious. People keep treating him like everything he says is either 3D chess, or a joke, or in QAnon’s fantasy’s ‘a little of both to own the libs’. So he gets away with ‘just joking’ about shooting people. Or is ‘just joking’ about sexually assaulting women or ‘accidentally’ walking into dressing rooms with naked teenage girls in it.
Ha ha ha! Grandpa is so funny!
When a president does something, has their administration follow up with other countries to accomplish something, it is not a ‘joke’. That is something they did.
Stop making excuses for him.

The US did try to buy Greenland at the end of WW2 and the deal almost went through but failed in the end. But also I do think we should consider what the people of Greenland think about this. I would think most rather stick with Denmark considering how the US treats it’s other territories and the US’ reputation for ruthless capitalism at the expense of everything else.

That was a rhetorical statement. I know he wasn’t joking, but I wanted to see if someone would catch the obvious rhetoric. (“joking” in this case)
That said, though, TheMarySue has a good point though in here: ‘This deranged buffoon’: Trump’s Canada joke isn’t sitting well with the internet:
The issue is with Trump, we can no longer tell when he’s joking and when he’s being serious. Does he even know anymore? So many wild claims he has made in the past have become reality. He has a weird gift in that respect. Trump’s return to the White House has many in a hyper state of vigilance, so even if this is just a harmless joke, our instinct is to take him at his word.

I think Trump has just picked up that “It’s just a joke” is an excellent deflection whenever he gets backlash. Rather it’s a joke or not just depends on the reaction, if the reaction is positive it’s serious and if the reaction is negative it’s a joke. That way he can make statements and later on effectively deny saying them.
Trump is a very impulsive and reactive person. He usually talks and thinks rather than the other way around.
In regards to Greenland you also have the fact that Denmark is part of the EU. When China tried to bully Lithuania out of having relations with Taiwan the EU rallied behind them. So if Trump starts to try to bully Denmark into giving up Greenland the EU might rally again leading to conflict.
Really what Trump is doing is destroying the US empire. The US ruled the world because it had Europe dependent on it, Canada a firm ally, Japan, Taiwan and South-Korea under it’s protection and most of South-America in various levels of domination. Trump is looking to destroy that empire.

I think it’s kind of all. Trump says absurd stuff and thinks later. He just says he will do it and then later on considers if it’s a good idea or not. We don’t know if it was a bluff because he likely hasn’t decided that yet.
