Curse myself for continuing this debate, but here’s a perspective from a disabled person:
Here’s the thing: Twitter is the best tool for this stuff around. and it’s a hellsite that has ruined the internet. It’s in large part twitter’s influence, and other social media things like it, that have turned the internet into its current form where people need platforms like it.
But that doesn’t mean we don’t need platforms like it.
I mean. You’re not wrong that Twitter is actively making things worse. But just killing Twitter, while it might help in the long term (Debateable at best, something even worse will likely grow out of the situation), fucks over a huge amount of people in the short term.
The cars analogy is a good one too, just in the opposite direction: The way our society works around cars is terrible - but cars themselves are still the best option for some situations, including for some disabled people so the analogy fits even there.
Our cities being built around cars, cars being the main or only method of transport, is all fucked, but there’s some things for which they are still the best option. Also planes. there’s things for which planes are the best option! Mostly just for crossing one of the Big Fuckoff Oceans, but that’s still an important role.
These things as they currently are are absolutely awful but getting rid of them entirely would cause huge problems in some circumstances. Which is absolutely not to say do nothing, there is a vast spectrum between “do nothing” and “yeet the entire thing”.
