Ok is there a reason why people are calling Joe Biden “Brandon” now?
Is this because of the “let’s go brandon” meme or is it just the newest insult for Biden?
Yes, it’s related to the original meme, but a lot of progressives adopted it as well, using it sarcastically or ironically to rob it of some power. That and it’s funny.
Joe is a much better president than Donald Two-Scoops, but Trump set the bar so low it was underground.
About all Joe has the power to do is stop the hemorrhaging. He can’t actually do anything of consequence because of manchin and sinema

Mostly just Manchuria Manchin now.
Even “Lizard People are Real” Sinema has been willing to budge. It’s just that overgrown coal-stack sticking around.

I’m pretty sure that’s because modern conservatism generally requires believing in things that are on their face false, like trans people are pedophiliac demonic child hunters, Joe biden lost the election, or basic history is too woke. Bringing that here would result in a rightful dog pile and getting told to fuck off.
I have seen conservatives on the Ponybooru politics thread when I looked there though.
On a side note let me tell you, I’m glad I missed whatever caused the Great Booru Splittening and made those soon to die on their own failure copies of Derpibooru, but also happy to hear it it happened because good fucking riddance to everyone that left. They were linking to the goddamn Daily Stormer over on Ponybooru and there was no pushback. I’m glad they’re gone.

The tl;dr is that Derpi attempted (and ultimately failed) to ban hate imagery and Nazi pony OCs, leading to a massive backlash that saw the mods and admins responsible forced out. The alt-right bronies were able to present it as a “campaign against censorship.”
We still got some clarified rules out of it that banned hate speech, hence why the people who boycotted Derpi haven’t come back. I agree though, good riddance.
Though I’m a bit pessimistic about the copycats dying out. The far-right is nothing if not persistent in colonizing and staying in fandom spaces.

Hate imagery and nazi apologia are banned. I wanted to do away with the crass shit that are the various nazi OCs, and a fair number of images were wiped, but others felt too many fell into parody/satire or fetish porn as to have a blanket ban on them.
The main reason people think otherwise is bad communication coupled with people believing what they wanted to believe in order to justify being angry. Plus a few that already hated this place and wanted a big dramatic out as their off ramp to the respectable furry fandom, or just wanted clout and were happy to bullhorn bullshit.

Part one of (maybe 4) that I would like to note here. Feel free to comment on it. Feel free to ignore it.
But I wouldn’t be posting this here if I A.) didn’t care and B.) thought it would bring some people food for thought here. But if none should care, hey, who am I to judge opinion - And no, this is not about Germany, but from a German perspective regarding Europe. Unless the US-Americans present here don’t give a shit about the EU anyway ;-)
Germany hopes for a Russian defeat in Ukraine - but historian Jörg Baberowski warns: Putin knows exactly our weakness. The West wanted to bring Vladimir Putin to his senses with sanctions. But what has happened so far? Germany is trembling before a Russian gas stop, while the Kremlin’s troops are gaining ground in Ukraine. Russia’s economy, moreover, is anything but down, despite all expectations.
Vladimir Putin has often proved that he has patience. Now he is waiting for the enthusiasm in the West for the Ukrainians’ defensive struggle to die down. An illusion? Not at all, says Jörg Baberowski, one of the most respected experts on Russia and its history. In an interview, the historian explains why he believes Putin will win in the end, what the West needs for the confrontation with Russia, and why we should nevertheless not fear the Russian army.
Professor Baberowski, the West has imposed tough sanctions on Russia, and the Ukrainian army is defending its country with tenacity. Vladimir Putin, however, seems unmoved by this. How does he manage that?
Jörg Baberowski: Putin knows exactly that time is playing in his favor, no matter what sanctions the West imposes on Russia. As long as China, India and other countries take oil, Putin will be able to compensate for the sanctions through exports. At the moment, the ruble is stable, and the Russian economy has not yet collapsed.
The West, on the other hand, is not doing well economically at all. Inflation is high and there is great fear, especially in Germany, of a complete halt to Russian gas supplies. Will the Western front against Russia erode soon?
The Western front against Putin has been crumbling for a long time. Some companies have withdrawn from Russia. But others continue to do very good business with the Russians. Now prices are rising in the West, and the inflation rate is at an all-time high. As soon as winter sets in, we too will feel what it means to be sanctioned. And soon bills will be presented. I cannot imagine that citizens in the countries of the West want to make sacrifices at any price. Every democratically legitimized government has to reckon with that.

What do you expect after the summer months?
In the winter, Putin will be able to use his most powerful weapon: shutting off the gas pipelines. He knows, of course, that support for Ukraine will wane as homes cool and wallets empty. That is why he is not interested in any negotiations and will continue this war until the united front in the West erodes.
When might this happen?
It is no secret that the chances are slim for the Democrats to preserve their majority in Congress in the U.S. Midterm Elections in early November. There is a strong tendency in the Republican Party to keep the U.S. out of conflicts. If the U.S. withdraws from confrontation, the Europeans would face Putin alone. By then at the latest, the first European states will break out of the anti-Russia coalition. In Germany, the question marks are undoubtedly bigger than in Poland. But Germany also has greater weight in the European community. If doubts grow in Germany and France, the unity of Europe will be lost. Putin knows all this, and he will wage war until the doubts in Western Europe become a certainty.
What is the Russian population’s attitude to the war in Ukraine? The losses of the Russian army are high, the Western sanctions are clearly felt at least in some areas.
There is also criticism in Russia of the government and its war of aggression. But such criticism is formulated by minorities and does not appear at all in the official media. The majority of the Russian population is behind Putin; there is no sign of war fatigue, probably also because Putin has so far refrained from declaring a general mobilization. If the war continues for months or years, Russia will have an advantage over the countries of the West because its population is prepared to make greater sacrifices than the Germans or the French and because the regime does not have to take elections and public opinion into account. The expectation that there will be protests in Russia is an illusion. Putin is also using the war to eliminate the last remnant of organized dissent in the country. Critics are losing their jobs, being driven abroad or arrested.
But many Russians have close ties to Ukraine. Do you see no qualms there about destroying the country so brutally?
For most Russians, this conflict is not a war between two sovereign states at all, but a civil war aimed at forcing a breakaway province back into the empire. Putin wants to punish the Ukrainians for their “treason,” or so the Russian public sees it. This is also how the propaganda works: again and again, the great battles of World War II are recalled, in which all the peoples of the Soviet Union fought together against the German fascists. The fact that the former “Ukrainian brothers” turn away from this heritage is seen as “betrayal” in Russia. This is also the reason for the relentlessness of the war.
This is absurd propaganda.
Of course it is! But this propaganda is effective because it resonates on a sounding board, because people want to believe what they hear. Russia is the way it is - and not the way we in Germany would like it to be. Politicians who want to make it in diplomacy should know who they are dealing with and what they cannot expect. It is not enough to advocate and defend a moral stance if the opponent does not recognize the premises on which that stance is based.

First a break, I like to wait a few hours and see if anyone here is even interested. There is much more to say about it. But hey. Who wants to flood a thread? Everything in small packets. For the average person in the media. Already some thought fodder. The hard stuff would still come. Reminder: not my personal opinion, but the opinion of someone who has been involved in European-Russian diplomacy. And the EU-Russian mentality understands. ;-)

I am always amazed how people try to frame this as a left vs right issue, not being easily offended and not thinking that these images are harmful is not something you can attribute to right or left.
That issue left Derpibooru in a worse state overall, but worse it weakened the fandom as it drove away people that just don’t want to deal with nonsense like this and further split the community.

I too worry about fossil fuels shortage affecting EU unity.
I think US withdrawal is less likely because Americans are not dying in Ukraine and the war is very low-cost compared to wars where US actually had troops on the ground.
There’s another problem to be mentioned. I worry about Putin making Belarus a part of Russia. Right now we can dream of Belarus becoming a democratic country. But if gets annexed, forget about it.

Kind of a pipe dream, considering Lukashenko is nearly, if not just as bad as Putin (who’d rather keep him as a puppet than go through the hassle of annexing the country outright).
But yeah, while I’d like to believe that the current NATO unity will keep standing strong against Putin’s energy blackmail, all it’d take would be for Germany or France to flake and Ukraine is screwed.

Ain’t the EU as a whole supporting Ukraine?
Pretty sure not just France and Germany alone can automatically just decline Ukraine’s process to join the EU.
