Biden has announced that he’s in favor of waiving Covid vaccine patent protections.
 
You know, before I thought the main thing justifying Biden’s presidency was the news that it’s pissing Obama off. You know, President Drone Strike? The guy who screwed over progressives and leftists thus consequently handing the country to Trump in 2016 to preserve his legacy? And who screwed over progressives and leftists thus consequently almost ensured the country stayed in Trump’s hands in 2020 to preserve his legacy…‘s image? Yeah there were reports that he’s not happy that Biden is being a bit too progressive and leftist for his tastes (re:slightly progressive and leftist).
 
But honestly? If Biden actually follows through and gives Big Pharma a middle finger then yes I won’t cringe at the constant “FDR 2.0” comparisons anymore. That alone would justify his presidency, let alone how it portents good things in the future.

As far as I understand, Covid vaccines are 100% free in the US already. Double check when you go to get yours, but the government is apparently subsidizing the cost whether you are insured or not. Waiving the patent protection doesn’t help Americans; it does help other pharmaceutical companies but Americans won’t be effected one way or the other.
 
What this does mean is that third world countries gets the opportunity to receive/produce generic versions of the vaccine at cheap. This is simply an ethical decision, and good on Biden for doing it.

Even when it’s not down to outright insults and threats, there’s always a heavy element of snark and strawmanning and the subtle/not so subtle aura of “im better then you”.

Define civil? Truthfully, I don’t believe any argument in human history, from the great Greek Forums to today’s, forums (ironically), have not had lots of sniping, subtle (and not so subtle) jabs, and a general sense of wanting to come out on top.
 
Humans are not Vulcans, never have been. We are emotional creatures, and a good 90% of our thinking is purely System 1 / Peripheral processing.
 
We symbolize and characterize, because it is easier. We create metaphors to attack our opponents and their arguments because it conveys information easier. We rely on heuristics for both good, and poor reasons.
 
 
This mythical, purely “civil” debate where not a single person throws a punch has never existed.
 
 
Theres a few centuries worth of drunken Greeks that will show you how “enlightened” humanity has been.

Wait no, I just realized. Although it’ll be too late to roll out generic Covid vaccines for Americans before the pandemic is adequately behind us, if and when it does if the government is still subsidizing it then they’ll be paying for cheaper vaccines. So while this decision helps poor countries more it still would end up helping Americans in the long run.
