Perhaps this could be the reason for USA and Russia to bond together - tendency to invade others XD

It’s called imperialism, and traditionally empires are more likely to be rivals than allies (unless they have a common enemy to team up against).

Right now, I’d say Russia and China are the more likely to bond together over their respective hatred of the US and disdain for democracy (but given their geographic proximity exacerbating the tensions between the two of them, it’s not a sure thing either).

It’s way more complex than that, as the Soviet empire under Stalin carried out a policy of divide-and-conquer, were territories were ethnographically gerrymandered in order to be (at least in theory) less likely to work together to overthrow their new Soviet masters. Khrushchev to his credit undid a lot of Stalinism, but the divided territories still remained. It’s not just the Ukraine mind you, but also Moldova, the Caucasus’s, and Central Asia. If you’re a Russian in Eastern Ukraine when an anti-Russian government is elected in Kiev, or an Armenian in Western Azerbaijan when Baku starts becoming extremely pro-Turkey, you aren’t going to be too happy with a government that sees you as a pest to be removed.

Russia doesn’t want to take contested territory if it can help it however, because…

@MagpulPony

…It’s in Russia’s best geopolitical interests to keep the knife in, because it’s beneficial to the Russians for their adversaries to fight amongst themselves rather than uniting against Russia and threatening its interests. A best-case scenario for them is that pro-Russia separatists continue to occupy Eastern Ukraine, so as it keep its influence strong in the region, and have a market for its goods and weapons.

Y’know, for “friends” of Iran and Venezuela, they sure are letting their economies tank needlessly. Like I said: Russia doesn’t have friends, only temporary alliances.

Iran and Venezuela are distant countries while Russia and China literally are “touching themselves” and rivalize over Mongolia.
I think this will end with free-for-all - USA vs Russia vs China.

As a general rule, weapons should be of the simplest possible design while meeting the needs of their intended use. This serves several functions. First, it has a quantitative effect: it keeps the costs under control, which means they can be purchased in numbers large enough to be useful on the battlefield. The more complex a weapon system is, the longer it takes to educate and train troops to operate the weapon. Unit training suffers as well because the force spends an inordinate amount of time on basic maintenance rather than going out and training to use the weapon in the field. And the effects of complexity are cumulative: every extra component added to a weapon system is one more potential failure point. This increases the maintenance burden and increases the chances that the weapon will not be available when it is needed most.
Murphy’s Law looms large in all military operations. The author experienced this numerous times while serving in the Marine Corps. As fearsome as main battle tanks are, they are notorious for breaking down. Every time a tank breaks down in the field, operations are disrupted. Depending on the circumstances and the logistics plan, the effects of these breakdowns can be overcome, but the tempo of the mission will be disrupted and battlefield opportunities, which are always fleeting, can be missed. With this elemental knowledge in place, Service leaders signing off on a new weapon system should opt for the simplest possible designs to minimize potential maintenance problems to greatest extent possible. Doing so will provide Murphy with far fewer opportunities to wreak havoc.
The Pentagon also spent $20 billion dollars trying and failing to develop an counter-IED systems which saved less than zero lives. The F-35 is going to end up like the F-22 program, even if it manages to produce a somewhat decent fighter, in that it’s too expensive to field, and they paid too much for what they got.

And yet moving forward with the initial plan of 800+ F-22s would have actually been the best option in the long run looking back. We can’t win a war without stealth assets or ultra high speed. We need one, the other, or ideally both. Which is why we have 5+ Hypersonic programs, the B-21 Raider, the SR-72 Blackbird program, Glidebreaker programs, etc.

Not that basic, simple, and easily replaceable weapons are bad. The new DARPA Gremlins program aims to do just that with drone swarms that can overwhelm the enemy while the big, expensive/advanced fighters then swoop in and kill everything that is left. The best of both worlds. If you go with the bare minimum of technological necessity, you will lose.

No one is discounting the need for high-tech solutions where needed. The problem is that the defense establishment is obsessed with high-tech solutions for absolutely everything. You also cant win wars if the country is bankrupted by the cost of those weapons systems either. You do realise that the F-35 was meant to be a hybrid system like you’re discussing, right? Before the fighter jet mafia ruined it, the F-35 was meant to have one piloted aircraft with multiple robotic versions that were commanded from the piloted craft that went into battle with it, with the idea being that you get the best of both worlds: a human there to oversee and command operations in real-time, with cheap(ish) aircraft that limited the loss of expensively trained pilots due to there far fewer in the battle-space.

Not saying otherwise, that’s why I don’t take a Moscow-Beijing axis for granted either (just remember that World War 2 began with the unexpected Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, by which Nazi Germany allied with the Soviet Union to invade Poland and divide it between them — even if it lasted all of two years before Hitler betrayed Stalin, with the consequences we know).

Also, even if American democracy is a bipartisan hot mess right now, they at least still have enough checks and balances remaining to avoid keeping a single party with a president for life in power (which Trump can’t become, no matter how much he’d love having the same status as the one Putin or Xi recently granted themselves).

How so? It could be used with a variety of aircraft and the like it or not, the F-35 will be our main fighter for as long as it takes our Generation 6 fighter to enter service, which will be at least 20 years. And Boeing’s drone escorts already exist. full

Because it’s tied to an aircraft which doesn’t have working electronics. Like I said, the Guardian concept is good, it’s just that it’s tied to a terrible lead aircraft. It’s also unlikely that the F-35 will be the main fighter jet if it follows the F-22’s trajectory, with the government throwing in the towel and just purchasing more tried-and-true platforms; like they did when it came to the LCS and the Zumwalt-class destroyers. Better to adapt something that works than something that doesn’t.

That’s the problem though. The F-35 could probably still kill an F-15X by simply engaging from miles away without the Eagle even realizing there’s a plane until after its been fired upon. The F-15X is meant as more of a missile truck. Stealth fighters go first and deliver a first strike, and then F-15Xs move in and act as the sledgehammers essentially. Assuming we’re fighting an advanced military adversary.

Honestly not bad, but it seems to be there to complement the F-35 white elephant, and is beholden to the fighter jet mafia, because why make something good when you can continue to sabotage the venerable A-10.

At least it’s built on a platform that works, and is already better than most of the jets in both China’s and Russia’s airforces.
