It’s a winner take all system. Whoever wins an election means that they won over all the non-participants in the same election, since their non-action counts as a vote for the winner.
So while Trump was elected on less than one half of a quarter percent on the population, everyone who didn’t or doesn’t vote in reality ends up being counted for him because he won the state by simply having the most votes, and the nuance of the electorate isn’t counted. Same applies to Obama, Bush, Clinton, and so on.

I find it funny that those who say “If you didn’t vote, you have NO right to complain,” are usually the ones that voted these politicians in office.
