Yes and no.
For the record for everyone here, tobacco is still bad for you. And is addictive on its own. I highly recommend the recent Kurzgesagt video on the subject for the full effects.
That being said, on average, purer tobacco has less deleterious effects than cigarettes. Tobacco tar still has dangerous trace elements in it, like cadmium, and the loose leaf tobacco you can buy at places like gas stations still often have additives in them. They just have way less than cigarettes, which are often loaded with a dueling cocktail of chemicals designed to simultaneously slow the burn to enhance inhalation, and speed it up so that it lights easy. Ammonia is one, propylene glycol to absorb water, and the tobacco itself is often washed with acetone. The sugars added to make the smoke less harsh (and to appeal to the youth) can break down into Acetaldehyde.
Your safest bet is to go to a proper smoke shop, most cities will have one or two bespoke tabaccoists. Often times they’re ran by people who mill and dry their own tobacco, and take a lot of care in their jobs.
Still, always remember that nicotine itself is a toxin. And burning it, even pure, will contain chemicals like cadmium, lead, and benzene.
If you want to indulge, take it slow and make it “special”. Don’t smoke it during high stress situations or during depressive bouts, especially as a way to stress relieve, as that can enhance dependency. Go to reputable smoke shops, talk to the owners and don’t be afraid to ask them for tips and advice.
It can be a fun activity, but always be cognizant of the dangers. Like all things, it is best enjoyed in moderation.
