I still say Joey should have won, but still almost dies and Marik goes into the finals by default. Add in this experience shakens Marik and causes him to play too passively, causing his own defeat and it would have been a better outcome in my opinion.

And have Joey help Yugi beat Marik while knocked out. Maybe keep Mai awake so we see her feeling helpless to help and question if the joy of friends (and romance for the Mai/Joey shippers) is worth the pain of losing them. Also don’t stop the tournament for Virtual World 2, Electric Boogaloo.
