People sometimes quote “Anime was a mistake”, and attribute that quote to Hayao Miyazaki. Now, I’m fairly sure itas a joke, but it can be hard to tell with some people.
Assuming it isn’t a joke, there are a few problems with that:
Hayao Miyazaki definitely invent anime, so he can’t be to blame for it.
Also, if that quote isn’t a troll quote, is the point that he thinks it was a mistake to get into producing anime movies? Or did he think anime was someone else’s mistake to begin with? Do people genuinely assume he invented it? There are dummies and trolls alike around the web, after all.

Actually, scratch that. It is a troll quote, according to some sites I checked.
I saw that quote before, but I never really thought that hard about it until now!
Still, I maintain that some people out there must really believe stuff like that

This quote seems to be one of those cynical critiques on society.

As in “gone are the days of quality anime of beauty and now we’re stuck with some soulless harem anime.”

That seems to be the vibe with this quote.

Miyazaki did say something to the effect of modern anime being not of a high enough quality, but he didn’t say it’s all awful. That’s what I think the troll quote boils it all down to. Kind of takes things out of context, a la tabloid journalism.

But seeing meme variations of the original troll quote is pretty amusing
