To be fair to the Wizarding World, they stopped that competition (Tri-Wizard Tournament) in 1972 because of too many dead kids. Which were certainly due to the dragons, drownings, and all the horrors lurking in the maze.
Dumbledore decided they needed to bring it back because apparently he wanted to **watch** the children die, and all the ridiculous shit that had seemed to lurk in the school each year (giant three-headed monster dog, troll, etc. in year 1, the giant snake that could kill if you looked it in the eye in year 2, the soul-sucking monsters trying to find the escaped murderer lurking in the school in book 3) weren't doing it for him.
