Still, I think the focus should be firing the tracer and hiring the artist they’re tracing, since in your scenario, they would accuse you or tracing due to the credit being officially given to someone else.

o yea for sure. i’m not saying the thief should get away and the original artist left without some compensation. I dont’ condone art thievery.
 
sure you can get accused of tracing offical fanart but ppl will investigate that stuff. in the case of online fanarts, you can usually trace back when is the first instance of said image and where. if someone was to steal something from Artstation or any online platform then you can see upload date and linked artist account. besides, if an art is popular enough to be stolen it would mean they’d have views and faves already piling up. Them ppl who already seen the image would defo recognize a stolen art and would come to the original artists’ defense, and as side effect, the artist gets extra clout for being the guy whose art got stolen by official channels.
 
most of the time the original artist could back up his claim to its ownership. art thief on the other hand could only say shit like “I used it for reference” as their argument, when they got caught stealing.

I think when a company like Disney is involved, things will end up differently due to one side having much more financial power.

short term maybe. but Didney isn’t dumb. if ppl start boycotting Star Wars because they steal shit then they can’t EVER pretend to have the moral high ground, because stealing shit is universally wrong, regardless what color in the political spectrum you in.
 
Besides, since the video mentioned that the artist was once commisioned to do Star Wars, then in this case he could prove that Didney was being a cheap fuck and it would look ultra stupid and scummy if they would spend MORE MONEY on legal battles defending stolen art than just paying the artist what he’s due.

Probably is still hired especially if the dude can work under pressure under deadline and underPAID. My guess is that hiring the OG artist would mean they have to rely on his work schedule, something that sometimes simply don’t fly in big production team, where one delay could delay everybody else. You know, crunch-culture and stuff.
 
These guys run a tight deadline and quality sometimes don’t mean jack, especially for B-Tier merch like spinoff one-shot comics, novel cover, artbook that nobody sees or album art.
 
Currently Photobashing is one of the top tier skill that companies are looking for because with it they can produce top quality shit using images they don’t make. It’s fast, it comes out good, and usually smart photobashers can mask the fact that their shit are stolen.

Yeah. I think Jim Sterling was criticizing the hell out of it, IIRC. The worst part is that you’re expected to crunch. Companies hire ppl who want to crunch so when facing criticism they’d argue it’s just work ethic and the employees do this willingly.
